COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is part of a national volunteer movement that began in 1977 in Seattle when a juvenile court judge conceived the idea of citizen volunteers speaking up for the best interests of children who are in foster care due to allegations of abuse or neglect. Today, the CASA movement has evolved into one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country. Judges appoint CASA volunteers to advocate for children in court, school and other settings with the goal of reuniting children with their families. Collectively, the local CASA programs in Texas serve the majority of Texas' 254 counties. As integral members of their respective communities, they recruit, train, supervise and support court-appointed volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children. Local programs also coordinate and collaborate with other service providers who share the mission of supporting Texas families.


Established in 1989, Texas CASA is the statewide membership association for all local CASA programs. In this role, we support the CASA network by serving as the administrator of state and federal funds, setting and monitoring standards, providing training, leading a statewide volunteer recruitment campaign, advocating for public policy and more. Texas CASA is committed to partnering with statewide stakeholders and the CASA network to elevate best practices when working with children and families. Texas CASA is a registered 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to support local CASA programs with training, community awareness, resources and public policy to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families in Texas.

POSITION SUMMARY: To support Texas CASA's communications efforts by creating and editing content, assisting with digital and social media communications, supporting storytelling and media initiatives, and contributing to projects that strengthen awareness of Texas CASA and the statewide CASA network.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Social Media & Digital Communications

• Assist with maintaining Texas CASA's social media presence, including content development, scheduling, posting, and community engagement.
• Support the development and maintenance of social media content calendars.
• Assist with creating graphics and other visual content for social media using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Monitor social media and digital communications for relevant conversations, trends, news, and opportunities to elevate Texas CASA's work.
• Assist with researching, developing, and organizing story ideas that highlight the impact of CASA volunteers, local CASA programs, and the Texas CASA network.
• Adapt content for different audiences and communication channels.
• Assist with the development and distribution of Texas CASA newsletters and email campaigns.
• Assist with tracking and reporting social media and email marketing performance.
• Assist with gathering, organizing, and maintaining photography, video, and other digital communications assets.

Communications Projects & Support

• Provide communications support to Texas CASA departments and staff as assigned by the Communications Manager.
• Assist with the development of marketing, promotional, event, and training-related communications materials.
• Research communications trends, best practices, and emerging platforms and make recommendations to improve Texas CASA's communications efforts.
• Assist with special communications projects, campaigns, events, and initiatives.
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with staff across the organization to support timely and effective communications.
• Support photography and videography efforts at Texas CASA events and other organizational activities as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

• Provide communications-related support to Texas CASA staff and local CASA programs as directed by the Communications Manager.
• Assist with responses to Texas CASA's Communications email inbox.
• Assist with maintaining communications files, content calendars, media lists, digital assets, and other department resources.
• Support communications activities at Texas CASA conferences, meetings, events, and other organizational initiatives.
• Analyze current communications processes and procedures and make recommendations to improve efficiency, quality, and effectiveness.
• Perform all other duties and complete special projects as assigned by the Communications Manager, Communications Director, Chief External Relations Officer, or CEO.
• Must pass background check.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

• Currently enrolled as a junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, public affairs, nonprofit management, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in writing, editing, communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field through academic, professional, internship, or volunteer experience.
• Must pass background check.

Preferred:

• Currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, public affairs, nonprofit management, or related field.
• Experience with nonprofit, education, government affairs, advocacy, or child welfare organizations.
• Understanding of the complexities of the child welfare system and the CASA model, including emerging systemic changes

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to write for a variety of audiences and platforms.
• Working knowledge of AP style and professional communications practices.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
• Demonstrated experience with social media platforms and digital content creation.
• Experience with Canva; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, consistency, and quality.
• Ability to learn and use email marketing, website content management, project management, and other digital communications platforms.
• Strong research and information-gathering skills.
• Good interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate with and communicate effectively with staff across all departments.
• Ability to work independently while seeking guidance and feedback when appropriate.
• Flexibility and ability to adapt in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
• Interest in nonprofit communications, child welfare, advocacy, public service, or related fields.
• Photography, videography, graphic design, or multimedia production experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The primary office is Texas CASA's headquarters in Austin, TX. Although work may be performed in a remote location requiring ongoing computer use, Texas CASA requires weekly transportation to the primary office at the discretion of the CEO. While in the primary office, the employee may be occasionally exposed to a variety of working and environmental conditions, that could involve intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, sitting and walking during working hours.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the person may spend several hours each day seated at a PC. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with physical disabilities to perform the job.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

COMPENSATION: $15.00 an hour

BENEFITS:
• Hybrid schedule
• Employer retirement contributions (amount equal to 5% of an employee's gross pay)
