Master HVAC Technician for Mission-Critical Systems

Master HVAC Technician – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune We are hiring a Master HVAC Technician to support mission‑critical infrastructure at Camp Lejeune. The Master HVAC Technician installs, modifies and repairs refrigeration systems such as hermetic, semi‑hermetic, screw, scroll and centrifugal units to 1100 tons; air conditioning; VAV and ventilation; VRF systems; CRAC units; geo‑thermal; reversible chillers; air and water‑cooled chillers; process coolers; ice machines; evaporative cooling; air‑compressing and related control systems, including pneumatic, DDC, and building‑control systems equipment. This person performs advanced installation tasks involving assembly, testing, calibrating, and adjusting of temperature control and environmental control systems such as air conditioning plants, air environmental control systems, air distribution systems and complex dual‑equipment cooling installations, specialized refrigerated warehouses and facilities and dehumidification systems. Additionally, the Master HVAC Technician installs new or repaired components and performs complex modifications of systems and components in accordance with applicable electrical publications and directives, and will maintain and repair specialized equipment such as DOAS; MAU and Pool Pak systems. This technician may perform complex repair of system components such as compressors, condensers, heat pumps, fluid and refrigerant gas lines, valves, meters, gauges, thermostats, pumps, mechanical linkage, electrical components, switching and controlling devices including pneumatic controls, variable speed drives, digital‑controlled devices, hydronic heating, cooling and economizer systems. Salary TOTAL COMPENSATION PACKAGE $77.16 per hour! $61.91/hr. plus $15.25 fringe benefits used towards insurance and 401(k)! Key Responsibilities Diagnose and repair various refrigerant systems including Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems, Chillers, Reversible Chillers, and CRAC Units. Cut, bend, thread and join tubing and pipes to correct lengths for refrigerating units using cutting, bending, machine‑threading, and hand‑threading equipment, and solder joints with a torch. Test joints and connections in refrigerant piping for leaks using a leak detector, and verify leak‑free status with a vacuum pump and vacuum‑hold test. Test and verify proper operation of components; connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and ventilation fans. Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units. Add or remove refrigerant (Freon) to achieve proper subcooling and superheat. Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation. Wrap pipes in insulation batting and secure them with cement or wire bands. Install, repair and service air conditioners ranging up to 1100 tons cooling capacity in warehouses, barracks and commercial buildings. Prepare work orders and cost material estimates. Assist in training lower‑level workers in mechanical repair techniques. Perform other related duties as assigned. Essential Skills & Qualifications Knowledge and proficiency of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of commercial and industrial HVAC equipment. Ability to perform technical tasks and upgrade skills as needed; plan and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records; handle hazardous materials. Knowledge of indoor air monitoring equipment and data interpretation; design and construction standards; air conditioning and heating codes; safety precautions; refrigerant handling and disposal. Understanding of safety issues when using tools, equipment, and supplies for HVAC repairs. Adaptability and flexibility in work situations. Practice workplace safety, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training and experience. 10+ years of advanced experience in the maintenance, repair, installation, and operation of commercial/industrial HVAC systems, including inspection, disassembly, assembly, replacement and repair of components such as compressors, motors, burners, pumps, filters, ductwork, pipes, valves, refrigerants, recovery systems and pressure vessels; and installation, calibration, troubleshooting and replacement of control systems. EPA Universal Refrigeration License. Valid driver’s license compliant with the REAL ID Act or willingness to obtain one. Pass a pre‑employment drug screening and background check. Regular, dependable attendance. Availability for overtime, evenings and weekends. U.S. citizenship to access military installations. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted. Use of hands, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and walking. Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, squatting, standing, twisting, or stooping. Climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.
