Chaperone - Village Health Occupations Program

Pay Range $25.00 - $30.04 Overview The VHOP Chaperone is essential to the safety and success of the Veterans Home Program (VHOP) camp. Working closely with the VHOP Coordinator, the Chaperone assists with pre‑program planning, makes reservations, and supervises youth participants (ages 16‑18) throughout the program. The role requires strong communication, crisis response, and a commitment to fostering a safe and engaging environment for all participants. Key Responsibilities Maintain developmentally appropriate interactions with all participants and supervise youth in both structured and unstructured activities. Respond promptly to any crisis or emergency situation, including fires, injuries, or other incidents. Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all participants during pre‑event planning, travel, and camp activities. Act as a positive role model: remain with the group, remain solution oriented, and refrain from cell‑phone use during scheduled responsibilities. Participate in all meetings and webinars before and during the event; guide youth to follow itineraries and timelines. Communicate regularly and timely with the event lead and all team members via email, phone, or text; provide the Chaperone’s own phone. Coordinate general setup and clean‑up activities with the team; maintain confidentiality of participants and families. Report misconduct or misbehavior incidents immediately to VHOP staff. Respect Southeast Alaska Native culture and communities; demonstrate an interest in working with youth. Coordinate activities with attention to detail and maintain a positive learning environment. Qualifications Valid Driver’s License with ability to meet insurability requirements. Knowledge of customer service concepts, privacy rules, tribal healthcare systems, local and regional community resources, and the local road system. Knowledge of customs and values of Alaska Native peoples. Ability to apply common sense to carry out written and oral instructions and interpret safety rules and procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to work independently or as part of a team, establish personal boundaries, and travel to other SEARHC locations. Physical capability to stand, walk, sit, use hands, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required; lift or pull up to 50 lbs. Physical Demands The role requires frequent speaking, hearing, standing, walking, sitting, and using hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach. Occasionally, the Chaperone may need to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift or pull up to 50 lbs.
