Eligible employees also benefit from a comprehensive benefits package that promotes a healthy work-life balance.Primary Purpose of Organizational UnitThe Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest clinical departments within the East Carolina University School of Medicine. The mission of the Department is to provide quality patient care, to teach medical students and residents, and to do research. It consists of 16 sections, Pediatric Outpatient Center, and laboratories (research and clinical), The sections of the Department are: Administration; Adolescent; Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics; Developmental Evaluation Clinic; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; General; Genetics; Hematology/Oncology; Infectious Disease; Neonatology; Nephrology; Neurology; and Rheumatology. The Department is funded from State appropriated monies, practice plan generated income, and by grants awarded.It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University School of Medicine, to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region. The achievement of this mission requires a full faculty commitment to the goals and operations of the Department of Pediatrics, the East Carolina University School, Brody School of Medicine. Brody School of Medicine operates within ECU Health under a joint operating agreement.Primary Purpose of PositionThis position provides Child Life therapeutic services to pediatric hematology and oncology patients and their families who receive care in the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology outpatient clinic at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, as well as in other areas at ECU Health. The position uses knowledge of child development, coping theory and psychosocial intervention to reduce distress, support medical compliance and promote adaptive coping during repeated procedures and chronic illness management.This position independently conducts developmental and psychosocial assessments, implements therapeutic interventions, and provides developmentally appropriate preparation and procedural support. The position participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team and supervises Child Life practicum and internship students consistent with Child Life certification standards.Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and ExperienceBachelor’s or Master’s degree in the therapeutic specialty area to which assigned. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure in speech pathology, audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other fields. This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS.
