Learn more about the UNT System and how we live our values at Department Summary The Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) is committed to providing UNTHSC faculty, staff, students and other partners with high quality, cost‑effective research bio‑resources. DLAM has a dedicated and experienced staff that contributes to the HSC’s exemplary program of animal care and use. DLAM provides veterinary and personnel training and expertise in laboratory animal medicine and technology. DLAM is dedicated to support the University’s research and teaching goals, to promote and assure humane care and use of animals through compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International and University policies for the humane care and use of animals. DLAM advises and educates researchers, staff, students and other professionals on animal experimentation issues and promotes best practices for the responsible use of animals. Our primary concern is the welfare of the animals used in the facility. We maintain vigilance in ensuring that the animals experience proper care and handling with minimal discomfort or pain, as well as live in an enriching environment. We adopt and abide by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine’s Position Statement regarding animal experimentation. Position Overview UNT Health is seeking a qualified Hourly Relief Veterinarian to provide veterinary services for research animals on an as‑needed basis within the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM). Reporting to the Attending Veterinarian, this position provides clinical oversight, veterinary care, surgical and anesthesia support, protocol consultation, and guidance on animal health and welfare. The Hourly Relief Veterinarian supports regulatory compliance and animal care programs while providing supplemental veterinary coverage for DLAM's research and teaching mission. Minimum Qualifications A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with post‑doctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and five years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines. Encouraging and building mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members. Keeping up‑to‑date technically and applying new knowledge to your job. Ability to evaluate documents for accuracy and legal conformance. Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility. Preferred Qualifications At least seven years of experience in institutional veterinary medicine (at an academic, industrial, and/or government institution with animal care and use facilities supporting research/teaching activities) At least five years of experience in a leadership/management role A broad range of experiences with a variety of research and teaching animal models Knowledge of current federal program requirements and AAALAC accreditation standards Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills Ability to sustain constructive relationships with members of the animal care and use community and others across the institution. Required License/Registration/Certifications Current, active license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state, and the ability to obtain a Texas license within six months of hire. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration‑eligible, with the ability to obtain DEA registration within six months of hire. National Veterinary Accreditation‑Category II (USDA Accreditation) eligible with ability to obtain accreditation within six months. Job Duties Serves as backup veterinarian in the absence of attending veterinarian. Reviews animal care and use protocols. Provides recommendations for treatment of animals. Responds to after‑hours, weekend, holiday, and emergency veterinary calls, if needed. Physical Requirements Communicating with others to exchange information. Moving self in various positions to perform tasks in tight and confined spaces. Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Environmental Hazards Noisy environments. Small and/or enclosed spaces. Work with toxic or caustic chemicals. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles. Work Schedule Position is hourly and on an as‑needed basis.
