Staff Physician - Ophthalmologist (Glaucoma Specialist)

Overview The facility provides care to approximately 91,000 veterans in the midlands and upstate SC. CBOCs are located in Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Florence, Orangeburg, Sumter, and Rock Hill and provide primary care, mental health, and telemedicine services. Dorn VAMC is affiliated with the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine and provides teaching services for students and residents. USC is the state's flagship research university with Schools of Medicine. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); (3) Other residencies (non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed to provide appropriate professional training. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certified in Ophthalmology; Fellowship trained in Glaucoma; prior experience staffing resident in clinic and surgery, preferably VA operative experience – cataract surgery. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – please visit Physical Requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position – with or without reasonable accommodation – without hazard to themselves or others. Depending on the essential duties of a specific position, usable vision, color vision, hearing or speech may be required. In most cases, a specific physical condition or impairment may be compensated for by satisfactory use of a prosthesis or mechanical aid. Duties Evaluate new patients – walk‑in, consults from other services, ED referrals. Have a clinic to evaluate and treat scheduled new and follow‑up patients, including referring them to a colocal when necessary. Follow up labs and/or imaging ordered as part of evaluation/treatment plan (OCT, angiogram, CT scan, MRI, visual fields, etc.). Supervise residents in clinics – check assessments and treatment plans. Supervise and teach procedures to residents, such as retina, glaucoma, post‑cataract lasers, injections and other minor surgical procedures. IOL calculations. Teach and coach operating room procedures such as cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and retina surgery. Reach out to patients that message/phone call service to answer questions, give instructions, etc. Operative procedures work schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; night and weekend rotational call – operative time and clinical time. Schedule subject to change based on facility needs. Compensation and Benefits VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Recruitment Incentive (sign‑on bonus) may be authorized to a highly qualified candidate. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and possibly 5 days paid absence for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal programs can be carried into retirement). Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory. CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification). Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
