Civil Engineer

Job Title: Civil Engineer – Municipal and Land Development Job Description This role offers an opportunity for an Civil Engineer to join a collaborative municipal and land development team and contribute to projects from initial design through the municipal approval process. You will work closely with project managers and the design team, providing technical support, preparing detailed site plans and plan sets, and using Civil 3D and AutoCAD on a daily basis. The position focuses primarily on private land development projects, while also supporting a diverse mix of residential, commercial, institutional, multifamily, telecommunications, and municipal work. Responsibilities Participate in all phases of municipal and land development projects, from conceptual design through permitting and approvals. Prepare detailed site plans and complete plan sets using AutoCAD and Civil 3D on a daily basis. Design portions of civil, environmental, transportation, site planning, surveying, and landscape architecture projects under the supervision of engineers. Assist with field surveying activities and perform construction observation as needed. Support the preparation of project documentation, including drafting reports required for project permits. Research technical literature, product catalogs, and reference materials to support design decisions and project specifications. Assist with quantity estimates and other project-related calculations under guidance from higher staff. Attend project meetings with the project engineer and broader project team. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to ensure designs meet project requirements, applicable codes, and client expectations. Travel locally to job sites as needed to support project activities. Perform other related engineering and design tasks as assigned. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. 0–2 years of experience in civil engineering or closely related work. Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D, with the ability to use these tools on a daily basis. Experience or exposure to land development or site development projects and/or municipal engineering projects. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or active registration to take the EIT exam. Ability to perform basic civil engineering design tasks under supervision. Strong attention to detail in preparing site plans, drawings, and technical documentation. Willingness and ability to travel locally to project sites when needed. Effective communication skills to collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other team members. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and accept guidance and feedback from higher staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with civil, environmental, transportation, and site planning concepts. Exposure to field surveying practices and construction observation. Interest in working on diverse projects, including residential, commercial, institutional, multifamily, telecommunications, and municipal developments. Motivation to grow into a leadership or project management role as experience increases. Ability to manage time effectively in a flexible, collaborative work setting. Comfort working in a small, casual, and highly collaborative team environment. Work Environment The role is based in a small, team-oriented, and highly collaborative office of approximately 40–45 employees. The environment is casual and supportive, with a strong emphasis on cooperation and knowledge sharing among engineers and designers. Core hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but scheduling is very flexible to accommodate individual needs and project demands. The preference is for team members to work in the office every day to support collaboration and mentoring. For candidates who live more than an hour from the office and demonstrate the required skills, a hybrid arrangement of 3–4 days per week in the office may be available after an initial 4–6 week in-office training period. The position involves regular use of AutoCAD and Civil 3D and may include local travel to job sites as needed. The organization offers hourly compensation with eligibility for overtime pay beyond 40 hours per week, providing the opportunity to increase earnings when working additional billable hours. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ann Arbor, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $43.00/hr.
