George Fox University's Athletic Department is seeking a highly-motivated individual to serve as an Assistant Certified Athletic Trainer. About the Job The Assistant Certified Athletic Trainer serves as a vital member of the sports medicine team, providing comprehensive healthcare with a primary emphasis on the George Fox University Tennis, Cross Country and Track & Field distance programs. This role is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, immediate management, and targeted rehabilitation of athletic injuries, with a specialized understanding of the unique biomechanical demands, overuse injuries, and training cycles inherent to endurance athletes. Working collaboratively under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant ATC ensures the highest standard of student-athlete wellness, safety, and performance. Due to the nature of the competitive collegiate track and cross country schedules, this position requires regular weekend and travel commitments throughout the academic year, with structured, compensatory days off provided during the week. Job Responsibilities Clinical Care and Sport Coverage (80%) Comprehensive Athlete Care: Providing high-quality prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluation, treatment, and targeted rehabilitation for student-athletes, with a primary focus on Tennis, Cross Country and Track & Field distance runners. Endurance-Specific Rehabilitation: Designing and implementing specialized rehab protocols addressing the unique biomechanical demands, overuse injuries, and bone stress risks prevalent in distance athletes. Event & Travel Coverage: Managing medical operations for home athletic events and travel with assigned teams for away competitions, including weekends. Daily Operations & Supervision: Overseeing athletic training room operations and supervising student work‑study staff to ensure an efficient, professional environment. Compliance & Safety: Enforcing GFU Sports Medicine policies, rehearsing emergency action plans, monitoring environmental conditions (e.g., heat/air quality for outdoor runners), and maintaining compliance with NCAA and Northwest Conference regulations. Operations and Compliance (20%) Medical Records: Organizing and maintaining accurate, confidential electronic medical records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and state regulations. Physician & Interdisciplinary Communication: Coordinating student-athlete care, referrals, and clearance statuses with team physicians, coaching staffs, and physical therapists. Inventory & Budgeting: Managing the inventory, ordering, and budgeting of athletic training supplies. Professional Development: Maintaining Board of Certification (BOC) requirements and Oregon state licensure. Mission Alignment: Articulating and embodying the GFU athletic program's mission in alignment with the university's "Be Known" promise. Faith Integration: Modeling a relational Christian witness to student-athletes, colleagues, and the broader campus community. Collaborative Culture: Maintaining courteous, effective, and team-oriented communication with coaches, staff, families, and visiting universities. Communicating effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service. By actions, words, and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role. A Day in the Life of This Position The Assistant Certified Athletic Trainer position varies day-to-day as it involves significant administrative office work, daily student interaction in both the athletic training room and at practices and competitions. This role requires travel as well as weekend and evening work. Certified athletic trainers work with students that are dealing with significant injuries, which leads to endless opportunities to care for our student athletes physically, spiritually and mentally. We’re Looking for Candidates Who Have A Master's degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field. Certifications/Licenses: Must be BOC certified and possess state athletic training licensure, certification or registration. Current Professional Rescuer CPR/AED certification. NPI Number required. Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across athletics staff, medical professionals, and student-athletes. Job Information Hours Per Week: 40 hours (1.0 FTE) This position requires irregular office hours including after-hours and weekend work to attend competitions, practices, etc. Primary Work Location: Newberg Campus Local and national travel is required. Working Conditions: Physical requirements could include lifting more than 25 pounds and performing any activities such as balancing, bending/stooping, climbing stairs, crawling, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, repetitive motion or reaching above shoulder level.
