Job Objective: Demonstrates advanced clinical and communication skills who, under the direction of the leadership, is responsible for optimal provision of quality patient care and assists with functioning of an assigned unit/clinic. Assumes clinical and operational leadership responsibility of the unit/clinic providing continuity and coordination unit/clinic activities. Demonstrates commitment to system values through customer/patient focus and continuous process improvement. Facilitates staff involvement in Performance Excellence. Assists leadership in monitoring compliance with all State and Federal laws. Accountable for assurance of staff compliance to Joint Commission Standards.

Job Description: Education: Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master's in Nursing Licensure/Certification: Required: California Registered Nurse (RN) licensure; Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association (AHA) required in all departments upon hire; Additional certifications required as outlined based on assigned department:

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certification from AHA and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): Upon hire: 6400 2N LDRP, 6530 Neonatal ICU Level II
  • Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Advanced Fetal monitoring: Upon hire for external new hires: 6400 2N LDRP if assigned to L&D (required for Labor RN only)
  • Within 90 days for internal transfers: 6400 2N LDRP if assigned to L&D (required for Labor RN only)
  • Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support (STABLE) course completion: Within 30 days of hire: 6400 2N LDRP, 6530 Neonatal ICU Level II

Experience: Required: Three (3) years of clinical RN experience Preferred: Experience in the area of specialty

Reports To: Clinical Manager or Director Supervises: Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Medical Assistants, Monitor Technicians, Patient Care Technicians and other positions as assigned Ages of Patients (as assigned): Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric Blood Borne Pathogens: High Potential

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns reporting suspected violations.

2. Monitors department specific standards of care/practice.

3. Develops Nursing and Operational P.I. Projects and communicates resultant data in conjunction with leadership and the UBC, as applicable.

4. Monitors unit/clinic readiness in TJC, California and Federal standards.

5. Ensures daily assessment of unit/clinic equipment to maintain quality controls (i.e. Crash Cart check, POCT, Med Refrigerators, as applicable.

6. Ensures unit/clinic based patient care equipment is working accurately without defect; places work orders when necessary with subsequent timely follow-up.

7. Rounds with staff members/patients daily to evaluate care and services of patients.

8. Facilitates availability of adequate material resources and supplies.

9. Assists control of expenditures within the department.

10. Assesses shift staffing needs consistent with patient mix, census and acuity levels.

11. Sets priorities appropriate to daily patient/physician dynamics.

12. Assures patient acuity classification is completed and accurate, if applicable.

13. Maintains communication and resolves issues regarding shift activities.

14. Coaches and educates staff regarding clinical questions.

15. Retains clinical competency for execution of patient care and serves as a clinical resource for the patient care team.

16. Facilitates multidisciplinary patient care planning and rounding.

17. Collaborates with staff regarding necessary physician notification.

18. Oversees medication barcoding compliance as applicable and monitors staff for compliance.

19. Effectively promotes and maintains the nursing shared governance model.

20. In collaboration with leadership, may be responsible for participating in the completion of performance reviews on assigned staff.

21. Participates in touch base rounding with case management and primary nurse for patient, as appropriate.

22. Administers all aspects of human resource policies including disciplinary action as delegated by leadership.
