Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Defense Attorney to join our litigation team focused on trucking and transportation matters. The successful candidate will defend motor carriers, owner-operators, drivers, brokers, and insurers in automobile liability and transportation-related litigation, regulatory proceedings, and coverage disputes. This role requires strong courtroom and deposition experience, familiarity with federal and state transportation regulations, and the ability to manage a substantial caseload while providing clear, practical legal advice to clients and insurance partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Represent carriers, drivers, brokers, and insurers in all phases of litigation, from intake through trial and appeal.
• Handle automobile liability claims and defense matters involving commercial motor vehicles, including catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases.
• Conduct and manage discovery, draft pleadings, motions, responses, and other court filings; prepare and take depositions and examinations under oath.
• Prepare for and try cases in state and federal court; handle mediations, arbitrations, and settlement negotiations with an eye toward cost-effective resolution.
• Provide clients and insurance carriers with practical risk assessment, coverage analysis, and litigation strategy tailored to trucking and transportation exposures.
• Coordinate and retain expert witnesses (accident reconstructionists, medical experts, vocational experts) and work closely with investigators and forensic consultants.
• Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and state regulatory requirements; advise clients on regulatory exposure and post-accident protocols.
• Manage case budgets, billing, and client communication; deliver timely status reports and participate in regular client calls and claim reviews.
• Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, associates, and paralegals; review work product and contribute to professional development within the practice group.
• Maintain accurate case files, track deadlines, and ensure adherence to firm quality and ethical standards.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the state bar; admission to federal court preferred.
• 5+ years of litigation experience with a substantial focus on trucking, transportation, or commercial auto liability defense; insurance defense experience highly preferred.
• Proven trial and deposition experience with a record of handling complex, high-exposure matters to resolution.
• Strong knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations, DOT compliance, hours-of-service rules, and common carrier liability issues.
• Solid experience with automobile liability litigation, defense strategy, and coverage disputes involving insurers.
• Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, including motion practice, pleadings, briefs, and client-facing communication.
• Demonstrated ability to manage a heavy caseload, meet deadlines, and work effectively with claims professionals and corporate clients.
• Experience working with accident reconstruction experts, medical consultants, and vocational specialists; familiarity with electronic discovery and case-management software.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to accident scenes, depositions, hearings, and trials as required.
• High ethical standards, professionalism, strong judgment, and the ability to mentor and lead junior staff.
