Position Details Classification Information: Position Classification Title: Building Environmental Services Technician; FLSA: Non-Exempt; Position Class: 16785; Position Summary: Working in building environmental services as a Custodian/Housekeeper, responsible for cleaning and disinfecting campus buildings. Responsibilities Daily routine cleaning and resupply of assigned work areas. Basic cleaning functions: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, removing trash. Fill dispensers (tissue, soap, etc.) to appropriate amounts with proper product. Clean restroom floors, commodes, urinals, sinks, mirrors, dispensers. Detail cleaning of assigned area, including dusting and glass cleaning. Project‑related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional custodial outdoor tasks. Submit supply requests regularly as directed by supervisor. Turn laundry in for regular cleaning, monitor equipment (e.g., vacuum bags or filters) and correct minor equipment issues. Collaborate with peers, assist where needed, share resources and information, and provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff. Communicate professionally with other staff members, complete mandatory forms such as sign‑in/sign‑out for attendance and university property/equipment. Maintain a healthy and safe working environment by reporting equipment malfunctions, adhering to safety standards, and labeling and storing materials appropriately. Qualifications Minimum Experience/Education: Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some positions. Preferred Experience & Skills: Experience with institutional cleaning in an educational setting, preferably higher education. Familiarity with a variety of cleaning equipment, including vacuums, burnishers, scrubbers, extractors, and wet vacs. Demonstrated flexibility regarding adjustments in job tasks and assignments. Required License or Certification: Valid US Driver's License – No. Commercial Driver's License – No. Physical Requirements – No. Competencies Technical Knowledge (75%) Includes daily routine/detail cleaning and resupply of assigned work areas in a timely manner. Performance improvement while adhering to green cleaning policies, safety policies, and assigned routines. Perform absentee coverage as directed. Submit supply requests on a predetermined date. Use only chemicals and supplies provided. Laundry to be turned in for cleaning and retrieved per supervisor direction. Monitor equipment status, submit updated information, provide feedback for repairs. Diagnose minor equipment issues. Interpersonal Skills (10%) Communicates with colleagues and customers effectively. Contacts supervisor for people requesting access without a university badge and turns in lost items. Maintains a positive attitude and demeanor daily, displaying excellent customer service skills. Communication (5%) Conveys information and ideas clearly and concisely. Listens and responds appropriately. Engages in electronic and written communication, completing mandatory forms and documents, such as sign‑in/out for attendance, property, etc. Performs computer‑related tasks such as digital time reporting and online training. Safety and Health Compliance (5%) Maintains working conditions that ensure a healthy and safe environment. Reports equipment malfunctions. Adheres to safety standards, wearing issued PPE.
