Small Things provides targeted access to nutritious food, workforce development, and services to advance family stability in high-poverty neighborhoods. We believe stability opens doors. Our guiding words come from Mother Teresa: “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”

Small Things started as a 501(c)(3) during the 2020 pandemic, providing millions of meals across the city from our Roxborough warehouse, aided by thousands of volunteer moments. Today, three (soon to be four) Small Things Markets offer dignified, full-choice shopping in low-stability neighborhoods. Together with Philabundance and other major food banks, we also stock more than 50 local pantries across the region.

The Role

The Warehouse Supervisor oversees daily warehouse operations. You’ll make sure donated and purchased food is handled and distributed safely and efficiently, keep inventory accurate, support warehouse officers, associates, interns, and volunteers, and uphold food safety and regulatory standards in line with Small Things policies.

You’re highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable. You’re comfortable with warehouse and inventory work, and you can manage multiple deadlines while keeping things confidential and accurate.

What You’ll Do

Warehouse Supervision

• Supervise daily warehouse activities, including receiving, sorting, storing, packing, and distributing food
• Manage, train, and coordinate warehouse staff and volunteers
• Oversee the warehouse team’s work schedule and keep hours within budget
• Ensure proper handling of perishable and non-perishable food, including FIFO/FEFO practices
• Working closely with the inventory focal point, keep inventory records accurate and update the “Food Received” and “Food Leaving Rox” sheets daily
• Help the team prepare pallets, load, unload, and clean
• Support emergency and high-demand food distribution efforts

RDO Compliance

• Oversee food safety compliance (temperature control, sanitation, pest control)
• Inspect incoming donations for quality and safety, and make sure they meet RDO requirements
• Document RDO standards, including checklists, inspections, and temperature logs
• Keep the warehouse organized and clean, and use space efficiently

Equipment Monitoring and Maintenance

• Monitor equipment use (forklifts, pallet jacks, refrigeration units and trailers) so operations keep running
• Track the maintenance schedule, make sure maintenance happens on time, and record all of it in the maintenance logs
• Make sure the team handles basic, routine maintenance so we don’t pay suppliers for work we can do ourselves

Pantry Partner Support

• Arrange weekly orders for markets and pantry partners on time
• Keep coordination and communication with Small Things partners strong
• Schedule partner pickups and make sure orders are ready in advance

Transportation

• Prepare the weekly transportation schedule and share it with the warehouse and transportation teams
• Supervise drivers and make sure they get their schedules on time
• Make sure drivers follow Small Things transportation procedures
• Maintain transportation documentation (e.g., driver pre-delivery checklists, temperature logs, maintenance logs)

Other

• Other tasks assigned by your supervisor within the scope of Small Things warehouse work

What You Bring

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
• 2 to 5 years of warehouse experience; supervisory or nonprofit experience a plus
• Knowledge of food safety standards (ServSafe)
• Experience working with volunteers or community programs
• Ability to operate warehouse equipment (forklift certification)
• Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
• Ability to lift and move heavy items (up to 50 lbs)

Working Conditions

Warehouse environment with varying temperatures, including refrigerated and freezer areas. Requires standing, lifting, and physical activity. May include early mornings, weekends, or emergency response shifts.
