PATH 3.0 - Screening Field Interviewer

Job Description Westat is seeking motivated and detail‑oriented individuals to serve as screening field interviewers for the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. The PATH study collects information on tobacco and nicotine use and examines the short‑ and long‑term health effects of such use on U.S. residents. The interviewers will locate sampled addresses, screen household members for a longitudinal study, and regularly transmit and report data and costs to their supervisors. Required Interested applicants are required to view the PATH interview video ( before submitting an application. Basic Qualifications Be 18 or older (or an emancipated minor) and able to enter binding confidentiality agreements. Be available to complete 20–25 hours of web‑based training per week between August 3, 2026 and August 16, 2026, and must communicate with a supervisor multiple times per week during that period. Minimum Requirements Live in or around the geographic work area defined by the project sample. Be available to work during the data collection period from August 17 through December 31, 2026. Work 20–25 hours per week, mostly evenings and weekends on specified days/times; 3–4 hours at a time. Be available for local travel to complete project work. Meet the following physical requirements: Lift and carry 20 pounds of equipment. Walk several blocks. Climb a flight of stairs carrying equipment. Have regular and reliable access to telephone service with a long‑distance calling feature (landline or cellular). Have regular and reliable access to a secure high‑speed home internet connection. Have a consistently insured, reliable vehicle that meets Westat’s minimum coverage requirements. Hold a current and valid driver’s license that is not suspended. Preferred Criteria In‑person interviewing and/or cold calling experience. Experience working with the public. Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Comfortable using a laptop computer. Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with study respondents. Comfortable working in unfamiliar locations and knocking on doors. Self‑motivated, organized, detail‑oriented. Ability to work independently and successfully in a team environment with little direct supervision. Bilingual in English and Spanish is encouraged. Willingness to travel overnight if required. Other Information Any offer of employment may be contingent upon post‑offer background screening. This is a part‑time, variable‑hour, non‑exempt position eligible for overtime, potential production bonuses, and other benefits based on hours worked. Health insurance and a health savings account become available after 1,560 hours of work. The position is subject to the Service Contract Act and provides paid vacation, holiday leave, sick leave, and 401(k) participation. Upon successful completion of this assignment, applicants may be considered for reassignment to other Westat field data collection projects.
