Role: Lead BI / Data Engineer

Contract Length: Contract (potential for future conversion based on performance and business need)

Location: Preference for candidate local to San Diego. Will consider remote candidate located in PST

Rate : $80 to $85/per hour

Position Overview

Seeking a Lead BI/Data Engineer to join a growing data and analytics team. This role plays a key part in reducing operational responsibilities currently managed by leadership, enabling greater focus on the development of a next-generation analytics platform. The ideal candidate is a senior-level, hands-on technical leader who can independently oversee code quality, mentor developers, and coordinate delivery efforts across a distributed team.

Team Environment

The Lead BI/Data Engineer will collaborate with:

• One full-time junior data analyst/engineer with approximately 5-6 years of experience
• Three offshore Tableau developers
• A dedicated production support team
• Project managers responsible for coordinating incoming work across multiple vendor groups

Primary Responsibilities

• Function as the day-to-day technical lead for the BI and analytics team, helping reduce the review and oversight responsibilities currently managed by the Principal, BI & Analytics
• Oversee code reviews, quality assurance checks, and final approval of dashboards, reports, and data products prior to production deployment
• Provide guidance and feedback to offshore Tableau developers and junior team members, ensuring recommendations are effectively implemented
• Partner with project managers to coordinate incoming requests, prioritize work, and support successful delivery of enhancements and ongoing initiatives
• Regularly communicate project status, risks, blockers, and quality concerns to the Principal, BI & Analytics
• Collaborate with leadership on the planning and implementation of a modernized analytics platform
• Promote and enforce development standards, best practices, and quality expectations across reporting, dashboarding, and data product initiatives
• Serve as a technical liaison across multiple vendor and contractor teams supporting business intelligence efforts

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in business intelligence, data engineering, analytics development, or related disciplines
• Strong hands-on expertise with Tableau, including dashboard development, code review, and adherence to best practices
• Proven experience mentoring or leading developers through code reviews, work product evaluations, and constructive coaching
• Experience working with offshore or geographically distributed development teams
• Strong knowledge of dashboard development, reporting solutions, and data product delivery lifecycles
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with leadership, project managers, and multiple external teams
• Demonstrated ability to work independently while owning production approval and sign-off responsibilities
