Title: Visually Impaired Position Purpose
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instruction and support to students identified with visual impairments, including blindness, in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) guidelines. This position is responsible for ensuring access to the general education curriculum, developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and supporting students in academic, functional, and independent living skills. The TVI serves as an itinerant educator, collaborating with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to maximize student achievement and independence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Equipment : Uses standard office equipment (computer, printer, copier, telephone) and art-specific tools, media, and instructional materials required for visual arts instruction. Travel Requirements : Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education, or Superintendent/designee. The TVI serves as an itinerant educator, collaborating with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to maximize student achievement and independence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direct and consultative special education services to students with visual impairments in accordance with IEPs
- Develops, implements, and monitors Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and timelines
- Conducts ongoing assessments of student progress and adjusts instruction based on data and individual needs
- Adapts and modifies curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies to ensure accessibility (e.g., Braille, large print, assistive technology)
- Collaborates with Orientation & Mobility (O&M) specialists, Braille specialists, and other related service providers to support student needs
- Consults and collaborates with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators to support inclusion and access to the curriculum
- Provides instruction in compensatory skills, including Braille literacy, assistive technology, social skills, and activities of daily living
- Maintains accurate and compliant documentation, including progress monitoring data, service logs, and IEP records
- Participates in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and other student support team meetings
- Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, needs, and services
- Orders, manages, and maintains specialized instructional materials and equipment
- Supports students in various school settings, including classrooms, community-based instruction, and school activities
- Administers assessments and standardized testing accommodations as required
- Attends professional learning opportunities to remain current on best practices in visual impairment education
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance

- Knowledge of characteristics and educational needs of students with visual impairments and blindness
- Knowledge of Braille, assistive technology, and low vision supports
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and GaDOE special education rules and regulations
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
- Ability to analyze student data and implement data-driven instructional strategies
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policy
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities across schools in an itinerant role
- Ability to perform routine physical activities, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting, and reaching
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to operate standard instructional and office equipment
- Effective verbal and written communication skills required
- Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) Teaching Certificate in Special Education with Visual Impairment (P 12) endorsement
- Valid Georgia driver's license and reliable transportation
- Experience working with students with visual impairments or blindness
- Experience with Braille instruction and assistive technology FLSA Status:Exempt
