Laboratory Technician

Location IC: NIA - 3001 S Hanover St, Harbor Hospital, Room SM535, Baltimore, MD 21225 Work Hours FT: 30-40 hours per week Position Summary Provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. Requirements Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related discipline. Experience: Working in a Biorepository and familiar with Biorepository practices. Software: MS Office Suite. Skills: Ability to coordinate repository projects, manage specimen inventory, operate laboratory machines and instruments, maintain reagents, and comply with SOPs and safety guidelines. Responsibilities Plan, execute, and arrange laboratory experiments, new techniques, and procedures; perform laboratory techniques related to scientific research. Coordinate repository projects and inform management of status updates regarding the re‑inventory project. Bar‑code, aliquot, and process specimens with appropriate speed and accuracy. Perform PBMCs procedures from human blood on various studies. Operate laboratory machines and instruments; prepare specimens and equipment for use. Ensure reagents are correct and replace expired or defective ones to maintain validity of results. Perform sample management and storage, working with NIA Core Lab Clinical Core Unit to implement storage and distribution of biological samples. Receive and log samples. Create monthly reports with repository updates and sample details; maintain database inventory and monitor overall sample inventory. Assign unique lab sequence numbers to each specimen according to protocols; assess specimen condition and quantity. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies; initiate purchase orders as needed. Clean and sterilize instruments, glassware, and equipment. Conduct routine equipment maintenance, review maintenance records, troubleshoot problems, and communicate with laboratory staff. Compose and edit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Biorepository in accordance with NIH standards. Coordinate with other laboratories for receiving and shipping specimens and share reports. Train staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures; provide technical help and expertise to lab members. Provide insights and expertise, recommend new strategies and approaches, and attend lab meetings as needed. #J-18808-Ljbffr
