Job Title: Registered Nurse - Intensive Care Unit Profession: RN Specialty: ICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years ICU RN experience required License: RN License Certifications: NIHSS, BLS, ACLS required; CCRN preferred Must-Have: - Trach care and chest tube management - PIV starts - Glucommander - Insulin drips and heparin drips - Management of vasoactive medications - Monitoring and management of invasive lines (arterial lines, central venous lines, pulse oximetry, intracranial pressure monitoring) - Assistance and management of bedside procedures (chest tube placement/management, tracheostomy, PEG tube placement) - Ventilator support management Description: This position is for an ICU RN in a 14-bed medical intensive care unit. The unit provides care for patients with a variety of conditions such as respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, ARDS, and overdoses. Chronic ventilators and chronic tracheostomy patients are common on the unit. The RN to patient ratio is typically 1:1 to 1:2, with the possibility of 1:3 in rare cases. Certified nursing assistants assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating, turning, hourly rounding, and transportation of patients. There is a unit secretary available during key hours, with a house-wide call secretary during the night shift. The nursing team has access to respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and intensivists 24/7. Telemetry monitoring is managed by a central telemetry unit. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC, with various medical equipment available for patient care. The department maintains a collaborative and busy environment where teamwork is essential.
