Position Description

Position Title: Middle School Language Arts Teacher School/Department: Clay Middle School / Language Arts Reports to: Principal Start Date: 10/19/2026

The Middle School Language Arts Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality instruction in English Language Arts that develops students' skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, critical thinking, and communication. The teacher creates a supportive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that challenges students academically and supports their social and emotional development. The teacher uses standards-aligned curriculum, effective instructional practices, student data, and formative and summative assessments to meet the diverse learning needs of middle school students.

Qualifications

• Valid Indiana teaching license appropriate for middle school English/Language Arts instruction
• Demonstrated knowledge of effective literacy instruction and adolescent development
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
• Ability to use instructional technology effectively
• Commitment to continuous professional growth and collaboration

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

• Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening
• Develop students' ability to analyze, interpret, evaluate, and communicate ideas using a variety of literary and informational texts
• Teach effective writing processes, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing across multiple genres and purposes
• Develop students' vocabulary, grammar, language conventions, and academic language
• Foster students' ability to think critically, engage in meaningful discussion, and support ideas with relevant evidence
• Select and utilize high-quality literature, informational texts, digital resources, and other instructional materials appropriate for middle school learners
• Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate interventions, enrichment, and accommodations based on individual student needs
• Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and academically focused classroom environment
• Use formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction
• Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, progress, and other required information
• Communicate regularly and effectively with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, administrators, and other stakeholders
• Collaborate with grade-level and content-area colleagues to plan instruction, analyze student data, and support student achievement
• Participate in professional learning communities, department meetings, team meetings, and other collaborative activities
• Support students in developing appropriate study habits, organization, communication skills, and independent learning strategies
• Integrate technology and digital resources appropriately to enhance instruction and student learning
• Maintain high expectations for student achievement while providing appropriate support and encouragement
• Implement classroom and school-wide behavior expectations and follow established district policies and procedures
• Provide appropriate supervision of students in classrooms, hallways, activities, and other assigned areas
• Participate in parent conferences, student support meetings, professional development, and school activities as assigned
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and other sensitive information
• Remain current with instructional strategies, curriculum standards, educational technology, and best practices in literacy instruction
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee

Student Support and Classroom Management

• Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, inclusive, and academically focused classroom environment
• Establish clear expectations for student behavior, participation, and academic performance
• Implement effective classroom management strategies consistent with district and school expectations
• Build positive relationships with students and recognize individual strengths, interests, and needs
• Encourage students to participate in respectful dialogue regarding historical, civic, and contemporary issues
• Support students in developing critical-thinking, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and citizenship skills
• Monitor student progress and communicate concerns regarding academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs to appropriate personnel
• Follow established procedures for student supervision, safety, attendance, and discipline

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

• Collaborate with grade-level teams, language arts colleagues, special education personnel, counselors, administrators, and other staff to support student success
• Participate in Professional Learning Communities and contribute to collaborative planning and problem-solving
• Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievement, and concerns
• Participate in parent conferences, staff meetings, professional development, school activities, and other assigned responsibilities
• Maintain accurate student records, grades, attendance, assessment data, and other required documentation
• Stay current with research, instructional practices, technology, curriculum standards, and developments in language arts education
• Participate in curriculum development, review, and implementation as requested
• Support district and building goals, initiatives, policies, and procedures
• Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, confidentiality, and sound judgment in all interactions
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or appropriate administrator

Physical and Mental Efforts

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the classroom and school environment
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults
• Ability to use computers, classroom technology, and other instructional equipment
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move classroom materials and equipment
• Ability to maintain an appropriate level of supervision and responsiveness throughout the school day

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

• Monday through Friday Normal school hours during school year
• Limited travel to and from district professional development meetings
