Anticipated Appointment Dates: This position is open until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified. Summer 5W1 May 26, 2026 – July 2, 2026 Summer 5W2 July 6, 2026 – August 12, 2026 Fall 2026: August 21, 2026 – December 23, 2026 Spring 2027: January 21, 2027– May 29, 2027 Hours/Units per week: Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester. Job Duties May include the following but will be dependent upon the specific area to which the Graduate Assistant will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty supervisor. Under the general supervision of the faculty member, the Graduate Assistant will: Provide professional non‑teaching assistance to faculty member Provide research assistance and practical experience in fields related to their advanced study Assist with handling or training other students in the use of equipment or other resources Assist faculty with research and preparation of course materials Participate in evaluation of students’ work Instructional support includes, but is not limited to, proctoring and grading examinations, recording grades, conducting small discussion groups and/or meeting individually with students in scheduled office hours to clarify course material for students enrolled in large lecture courses, and other related tasks. Program‑level support includes, but is not limited to, assisting faculty with research, editorial and administrative work associated with the DTLA Communication Studies Completion BA program, the Lancaster Prison Program / Prison Graduation Initiative, and the production of Colloquy, the academic journal of the Department of Communication Studies. Minimum Qualifications Degree‑seeking graduate student in the Department of Communication Studies. Graduate Assistant must be currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program. The successful applicant will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings. For subsequent appointment, evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree is required. Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of Communication Studies, in good academic standing Enrollment in course(s) for the semester toward the degree Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds Preferred Qualifications Good research skills, writing proficiency, agility in using educational technology, and an ability to mentor undergraduate students, are preferred. Understanding of quantitative, qualitative, or rhetorical theories and research methods, as appropriate to the content of the assigned class, is also preferred. Salary Initial Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
