Medical Laboratory Technician
Frederick Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for our Rose Hill location. As needed basis position (Variable Shifts)
Job Summary
Performance of assigned routine procedures in an efficient manner to assure quality care with minimal turn-around-time.
This position supports the Frederick Health mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the Frederick Health Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the Frederick Health Standards of Behavior.
Essential Functions:
TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES: Demonstrates proficient performance regarding all laboratory technical procedures.
o Makes decisions based on experience and/or education.
o Recognizes and resolves problems, troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and uses alternative methods where trained to do so.
o Correlates data extensively using clinical information and knowledge of testing theory to determine reasonableness of results.
o Follows protocol for running QC and accepting/verifying results and resolves any out of control, discrepant or unexpected results with adequate documentation of any corrective action.
o Produces accurate results, no more than one technical error in a 12-month period.
o Follows all laboratory specimen handling policies and procedures.
DATA ENTRY: Performs appropriate functions in LIS according to laboratory protocol with accuracy and precision.
o Produces and reports results with accurate transcription according to protocol in a timely manner.
o Maintains and completes patient information records as required.
o Completes work or reports results according to protocol.
PRODUCTIVITY: Consistently completes work within laboratory established Turn-Around-Time.
o Organizes and performs several tasks simultaneously during peak work periods.
o Consults supervisor for additional assignments or special projects during light workload situations that will be completed in allotted time, without interfering with regular duties.
o Completes work or reports results according to protocol; does not leave work for follow up.
o Participates in department performance improvement.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
o Demonstrates punctuality and timeliness regarding work schedule.
o Begins work at the start of assigned shift.
o Maintains attendance record for less than step 1 of the absence control program.
o Accurately uses time clock. Clocks in and out of every shift.
GENERAL LAB DUTIES: Demonstrates good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
o Adapts to change or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption in the work environment.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
o Notifies supervisor of any problems and documents any corrective action.
o Retains knowledge gained from training and requires no additional training to perform routine tasks.
o Maintains a clean, organized area with adequate supplies.
o Assists in basic procedures, report production, specimen procurement, and accessioning.
o Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
KNOWLEDGE OF MANUALS: Demonstrates knowledge of safety manual, Infection Control, Disaster manual, and department specific manuals
o Knows where MSDS are kept.
o Knows Chemical Hygiene Plan and what to do in the event of an actual chemical spill.
o Knows policies for Standard Precautions.
o Practices good safety and security habits.
o Knows what to do in the event of a disaster.
o Knows Emergency Response Plan procedures in the event of an actual fire or major spill.
o Follows all policies and procedures as outlined per department manual.
o Promptly reads and reviews new policies and procedures and follows same.
EDUCATION: Observes all aspects of job performance concerning objectives of laboratory in-service and continuing education.
o Attends department and/or staff meetings as required or reads and initials minutes within established time frames.
o Conveys knowledge competently to new employees in an encouraging and interesting way.
o Participates in staff development and continuing education programs.
o Recognizes employee's need for additional training when a new test is introduced or when a new employee is introduced to the shift. Communications with section supervisor so additional training can take place.
INFECTION CONTROL: Responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens
o Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment
o Changes gloves regularly and washes hands between and after glove changes
o Disposes of sharps in red sharps container where appropriate
o Throws used gloves in biohazard container only
o Wears lab coat

If Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials:
- Study Consent: Obtains consent from patients participating in observational studies under the supervision on the Research Nurse of Study Coordinator.
- Sample Collection: Perform phlebotomy on clinical trial participants.
- Sample Processing: Follows clinical trial lab processing manual for specimen handling and shipping.
- Sample Shipping: Packages and coordinates shipping for clinical trial lab specimens.
- Documentation: Responsible for completing internal documentation for specimens, as well as complete data entry on electronic case report forms.
- Assist as needed with Biobank Projects.
- Assist as needed with Medical Lab Technician related tasks in the Oncology Infusion area (IVOP).
- Responsible for maintaining lab kit inventory, to include monitoring for kit expiration, ordering new kits, and documenting lab kit destruction in alignment with each trial's SOP. Performs and Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Oral and written communication skills, manual dexterity, analytical skills and keyboard skills
Working knowledge of general types of laboratory equipment (centrifuge, microscope, etc.) keyboard, LIS, calculators, fax, auto analyzers
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:
Successfully completed academic course of study in an accredited college or university and the clinical training at an accredited facility which will lead to an Associate's Degree to become a Medical Laboratory Technician and eligible for certification.
o Alternative: Associate Degree in a related science with appropriate clinical training and
o certification eligibility; or 50 week military course with certification ability; or
o successfully passed HEW or HHS exam.
MLT ASCP certification is preferred, but not required.
- If Home Cost Center is Clinical Trials, Possess IATA and GCP certification or be willing to complete the required courses within first month of hire.
