STARTING STIPEND: $2811+ (Based on Experience) Season runs August through November SUMMARY To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill development, an appreciation for the values of student connectedness, discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. The philosophy of a varsity team dictates that as many athletes as possible should participate without sacrificing a chance for the program to enjoy competitive success. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OVERALL DUTIES Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved. Establishes and sustains a level of success in the following areas: participation in the 9-12 program, relative competitiveness at the conference level, and responses on student-athlete satisfaction surveys. Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted. Pursues and maintains competency in understanding and enforcing WIAA, Big 8 Conference and school board rules, policies, and procedures. Maintains, monitors, and reacts to daily attendance reports and participant emergency medical cards necessary. Develops a consistent and positive public communications procedure demonstrating interest and enthusiasm through the school and media to inform and promote the specific athletic program. Acts as a liaison with the booster clubs. Keeps other coaches informed of rules and other relevant changes within the particular sport. Demonstrates knowledge in the areas of physical and emotional health and safety. Encourages students to participant in multiple activities in and out of school. Works closely with High School Athletics and Activities Director in scheduling contests, recommending the purchase of equipment, and maintaining a program budget. Uses generally accepted practices and discretion in determining the proper course of action; using good decision-making skills. Demonstrates emotional maturity. Other duties may be assigned. PRE-SEASON DUTIES Plans, communicates and runs a pre-season meeting for prospective student-athletes and their parents to communicate team schedule, policies and procedures. Develops and distributes a team handbook by the first team meeting to include at least the following: practice schedule, team rules and policies, coaching philosophy statement, special dates and events, game schedule, team tryout process and criteria, lettering policy, how parents/students should communicate with head coach, and how players earn playing time. Attends and participates in Athletic Department sponsored athletic code meetings and successfully completes an annual National Federation of High School Athletics exam. Attends annual clinics or workshops that aim to enhance knowledge of the specific sport or other area as assigned by administration. Selects and defines responsibilities of student managers. Determines and communicates responsibilities of assistant coaches. Provides inservices for assistant and sub-varsity coaches via staff meetings, program goals, duties definition and expectations, etc. Recommends assistant or volunteer coaches to the High School Athletics and Activities Director. IN-SEASON DUTIES Takes the initiative to communicate activity on a regular basis to the High School Athletics and Activities Director. Plans and executes a regular program of practice in season. Develops and completes practice plans for each practice session. Provides documentation for each practice session upon request of administration. Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season. POST-SEASON DUTIES Collects, inventories, and arranges to clean and repair all equipment. Provides inventory documentation upon request of administration. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises students of particular program. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Coaching in the particular sport, with at least 3 to 5 years of experience. Experience at the middle/high school level preferred. First aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogen training is required. Knowledge in sports medicine is desirable. COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents or employees of the district. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in verbal and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, WIAA requirements, and School Board policies. Ability to use computers and other technology to accomplish job responsibilities. ANALYTICAL AND REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. TEMPERAMENTS Ability to connect, inspire, and lead students with a variety of learning styles and diverse backgrounds.
