This description outlines the responsibilities and qualifications for the Psychiatrist position within Behavioral Health, including potential telehealth and in-person duties. Time Type: Full time. Department: Behavioral Health Urgent Care. All Locations: 10 Gove Street – Taylor Building, 1601 Washington Street. Position Summary The Psychiatrist, as a member of the Behavioral Health care team, provides direct care to referred adult patients and demonstrates age-specific competency as needed. The Psychiatrist is responsible for delivering quality patient care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Reports to the Medical Director of Behavioral Health or designee. Conducts psychiatric/psychopharmacological evaluations for referred adults and uses population-based care tools (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7, C-SSRS) to guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and outcome tracking. Determines appropriate settings (primary care, specialty behavioral health, or community behavioral health) for patients and provides expert consultation to medical and behavioral health staff. May follow patients longitudinally in certain scenarios. Caseload includes consultative evaluations, short-term stabilization, and longer-term medication management for clinically complex patients. Education of providers, PMHNP residents, students, and supervision of PMHNP residents and students and other psychiatrists are components of the role. The position may involve both telehealth and in-person work. Responsibilities Establishes rapport and therapeutic relationships with patients from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of motivation for change. Demonstrates knowledge of community resources to guide and direct patients. Render accurate diagnoses utilizing the DSM-5-TR and apply evidence-based treatment guidelines. Document and present completed assessments for clinical disposition in a clear and organized manner. Provide consultation to and coordinate patient care with multidisciplinary staff in clinic and in the BHUCS. Maintain active DEA registration and fulfill federal and state requirements for prescribing controlled substances, including medications for opioid use disorder. Provide urgent coverage and crisis intervention for referred patients. Conduct suicide risk assessments and safety planning per organizational protocols. Screen for domestic violence, substance use, and risk behaviors with every patient; apply intervention protocols as needed. Perform and document outreach activities for patients who do not follow through, especially those with known risk factors. Serve as an expert consultant and/or supervisor to PACE providers for psychiatrically complex patients, as needed. Demonstrate capacity to diagnose and treat anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, and moderate-severe personality disorders with evidence-based psychopharmacology. Demonstrate cultural humility and trauma-informed care principles in patient interactions. Demonstrate excellent, advanced triage skills and assign appropriate priorities at all times. Provide education and supervision to medical and behavioral health providers regarding psychopharmacology and patient management. Perform thorough psychosocial evaluations with data to support diagnoses, findings, recommendations, and plans. Meet departmental documentation standards and complete documentation within 24–48 hours of service delivery for billing and continuity of care. Provide ongoing psychopharmacologic care to SCO providers for psychiatrically complex patients, as needed. Demonstrate clinical judgment in assessing changes in risk and coordinate with administrative and/or medical directors for Special Clinical Reviews as indicated. Acquire working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures and train new staff and supervisees as appropriate. Apply short-term, solution-based, and evidence-based pharmacotherapies to BHUCS patients. Manage a full caseload of psychopharmacology consultations, assessment, and medication management. Maintain professional licensure and accumulate required CMEs with documentation to the Medical Director. Accept responsibility for departmental projects or new functions as needed. Present clinical cases for review at daily and weekly meetings and maintain productivity in line with organizational benchmarks while ensuring quality and patient-centered care. Achieve direct care targets (e.g., 80%), analyze direct care data and no-show rates with the Medical Director, and implement adjustments as needed. Develop proficiency with computer-based applications and the electronic health record (EHR) system; participate in quality improvement initiatives using EHR data. Provide consultation, training, and supervision to departmental staff, medical providers, BH interns, PMHNP residents, and students as needed. Successfully manage all aspects of assigned programs or departmental functions. Ensure clean claims processes, including documentation, timely encounters submission, and re-authorizations. Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests, radiologic tests, and EKGs with SEM support; monitor metabolic parameters and safety labs per psychopharmacology best practices. Qualifications Medical degree from an accredited medical school and completion of an approved psychiatric residency. Current and valid board certification in psychiatry. Licensed to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Current Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR). Current DEA registration. Excellent knowledge of DSM criteria and crisis assessment tools. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Familiar with crisis assessment tools and techniques. Demonstrates trauma-informed care principles and cultural humility. What You’ll Bring Salary: from $248,500 to $302,920 based on years of experience and licensure level.
