Lactation Specialist

Lactation Specialist Internal Only Department Only Facility Kootenai Health Department Womens and Childrens Services - Postpartum Works in collaboration with the direct nursing staff and providers to assist the patient in achieving a satisfactory start to successful breastfeeding, including implementing short and long-range breastfeeding goals. Responsibilities Re-evaluates the breastfeeding plan of care for Mother and Baby Assesses the complete physical, emotional and social state of the mother Monitors normal weight gain in the breast fed infant Discusses normal growth and developmental milestones in the infant Discusses treatment modalities and comfort measures for common breastfeeding problems IBCLC provides support as directed by RN Monitors the use of short-term supplementation including bottle feeding, feeding tube device (FTD), cup feeding and syringe feeding Provides mothers with hospital grade breast pumps from the rental station and educates on use Provide mothers with a plan of care for breastfeeding and returning to work Collaborates with providers on the breastfeeding plan of care for both Mother and Baby Offers phone triage and counseling Facilitates breastfeeding classes to prospective parents Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function Performs other related duties as assigned Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned Requirements and Minimum Qualifications High school or equivalent preferred International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification required Minimum 1-year experience as Lactation Consultant in acute care or outpatient setting required BLS required Working Conditions Must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position Typical equipment used in a clinical job Frequent stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing heavy stretchers and other equipment Frequent moving, transferring and positioning of patients with and/or without assistance Benefits Comprehensive medical coverage, including fully employer‑paid options for eligible full‑time employees, plus affordable plans for part‑time staff.
