HVAC Building Service Engineer - 3 Positions Available Job no: 559011 Work type: Staff Location: Long Beach Categories: Unit 6 - Teamsters Local 2010, Probationary, Full Time Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and the immediate supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, the engineer maintains, services, repairs, and inspects heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, as well as the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and electronic systems associated with the decentralized utilities centers and the Central Plant facility. Key Responsibilities Operate, maintain, repair, and inspect heating, air conditioning, water treatment, and ventilating equipment (e.g., boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, circulating water pumps, blower vans, valves, ducting, gauge). Test, adjust, and calibrate heating and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic control instruments and systems. Maintain and inspect, diagnose, and make emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, air, and oil distribution systems. Periodically adjust air handling equipment to achieve air flow, temperature, and humidity balances for individual rooms, building areas, or buildings. Repair and replace bearings, shafts, seals, rings, electrical wiring, and install mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes that require skills equivalent to the journey level in one or more basic trades. Department Department Description Beach Building Services (BBS) provides facilities‑based support across academic, activity, and event services, contributing to the campus experience for students, faculty, and staff. Environmental Health and Safety Energy and Utilities Facilities Operations (Service Response, Fiscal Operations, Payroll/Personnel, IT Services) Planning and Sustainability Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (Engineering, Fire Alarm, Electrical and Plumbing Shops) Building Trades (Lock, Sign, Carpentry, Paint and Auto Shops) Grounds and Landscaping Services Custodial Services Design and Construction Services Time Base 1.0 time‑base, 40 hours per week. Duration of Appointment This is a regular full‑time position with a one‑year probationary period. Compensation Salary placement is determined by education, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and fiscal resources. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,998 (Step 1) – $8,737 (Step 20) per month. Key Qualifications The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of HVAC systems for central and decentralized plant operations, including electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls, and current facilities maintenance practices. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills are required. A trade‑related higher‑education background, including CFC certification, and experience in a university setting are desirable. Commitment to safety and a respectful campus environment is essential. Education and Experience Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey‑level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems. Four years of experience is preferred. Licenses / Certificates BCO Level I & II Certification is preferred. A valid California driver's license is required. Engineers operating motorized vehicles or using their personal vehicle more than once a month for university business must complete a defensive driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program. Physical Summary Heavy work - job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
