Bus Mechanic
The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics: $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary. Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour. Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour. Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics. Uniforms and Laundry Service provided.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, rotating shifts of 1:30pm to 10:30pm and 4:30pm to 1:30am; occasional Saturdays. This position is eligible for overtime. In addition, a shift differential of $1.00/hour will be paid for working the following hours:
- Monday – Friday: 6:30 PM until 4:00 AM
- Saturday – all day (24 hours)
Job Summary
Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of all vehicle/bus systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, battery electric vehicle drivetrains, transmissions, 12- and 24-volt electrical systems, engine and transmission computer systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and brake systems. Following Agency Maintenance Plan, performs A, B, C, and D preventative maintenance routines on vehicles and equipment. Assists in installing communications and telematic equipment into vehicles, including radios, camera systems, global positioning system (GPS) equipment and intelligent transit system (ITS). Follows work tasking on work orders and documents all work as required. This role serves as a developmental step toward the Senior Diesel Bus Mechanic position and includes periodic assessments to evaluate readiness for advancement.
Job Duties
Essential Functions
Perform Repairs and Complete Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform complex repairs on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles as well as shop/facility equipment, including work on diesel/gasoline engines, electric drive motors, high-voltage vehicle electrical systems, electronically controlled transmissions, ride height suspension systems, suspension linkages, steering linkages, kingpins, wheel bearings, tires, airbrake systems (including anti-lock braking systems), hydraulic brake systems (including ABS), multiplexing electrical systems, lighting systems, Bendix air systems, heating and air conditioning systems, bus fare collection systems, and ITS. Follow original equipment manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic processes and procedures—such as wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair and parts manuals, and schematics—to perform troubleshooting on vehicles, and/or equipment. Use diagnostic software (including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Wabco, Proterra Diagnostic, ViriCiti, Genfare, and Shopkey), multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and integrated on-board maintenance systems to identify defects. Once the issue is identified, determine an effective repair method and complete the repair to OEM specifications. Ensure that, upon completion, the vehicle or equipment is properly repaired and safe for its intended use. Actively contribute to the identification and reporting of safety issues or concerns encountered during the performance of essential job functions. Maintain accurate records of service and repair activities within fleet maintenance software.
Conduct Preventive Maintenance: Perform A, B, C, and D preventive maintenance services and safety inspections on a variety of gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles/buses as well as shop and facility equipment. Address and complete any necessary repairs for defects identified during the preventive maintenance process before returning the vehicle or bus to service. Use fleet maintenance software to complete electronic check sheets for each service performed. Ensure that the vehicle is operating properly and is in a safe condition for its intended use prior to returning it to service.
Assist in installation and Repair of Specialized Equipment: Assist in installation of specialized equipment such as cellular data systems/modems/Wi-Fi, emergency lighting, two-way radios, computer/mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, ITS, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals. Troubleshoot, repair, or replace these items as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Over two (2) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include at least one (1) year of experience working on transit buses or diesel engines.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on diesel, electric, and gasoline powered vehicles. ASE certifications related to Heavy Duty Trucks, Transit, and Automobiles.
Driver's License Requirements
Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire. Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence. Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence. Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of: Electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions. Failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles. The procedures and technical methods utilized in the testing, repair and adjustment of radio and other electronic communications equipment. Genfare Fare collection system repair and maintenance. Intelligent Transit System repair and maintenance. OSHA and safe working practices and procedures. Electric Vehicle High Voltage Power Systems & ARC Flash Training.
Ability to: Use pertinent test equipment including computers, gauges, and various types of handheld, mechanical and electronic testing or diagnostic equipment. Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles in and around bus garage/shop areas and on and along public right-of-way. Use independent judgment and decision-making abilities to apply technical skills effectively including making quick accurate decisions to minimize downtime of vehicles. Organize work to minimize downtime. Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. Detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Work with all levels of personnel and outside contractors and maintain good working relationships. Read, understand, and implement technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, service updates, and procedures, related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and their systems. Write reports and emails using proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Deal with a system of real numbers and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, electrical power tools, pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press. Utilize specialized systems including Cummins Insight, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, and Luminator destination sign software. Work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and a reasonable amount of overtime.

Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Fleet maintenance shop. Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves. Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.
Physical Demands: Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting and handling/grasping. Very heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.
Mental Demands: Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations.
