About the Position

The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights. Nurses are required to titrate certain drips, with exceptions for cardiac drips. Common titratable drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix. There are 2 charge nurses on day shifts who will take patient assignments. During nights, if only one charge nurse is scheduled, they do not take an assignment. Patient care technicians are present with an average ratio of 1:10-12. Job duties include monitoring vitals, performing blood glucose monitoring, conducting EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, and turning and positioning patients. Respiratory Therapy will administer breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manage respiratory equipment. Registered Nurses are typically not required to manage respiratory equipment, only to monitor it. A monitor technician is available to read and monitor telemetry for all patients and will notify nursing staff of any issues. Registered Nurses are not expected to read or interpret telemetry strips. Scheduling is managed by the department manager, who accommodates requested time off. Travel staff is expected to be flexible and assist in covering the permanent staff's schedule gaps. Working rotations may require two weeks of day shifts followed by two weeks of night shifts. Every other weekend is required for scheduling. Holidays are assigned through rotation. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating to other medical-surgical units or lower acuity patients is expected as needed. Required scrubs for registered nurses are navy blue, and patient care technicians wear ceil blue. Nurses will receive one day of education and one day of preceptorship for department-specific orientation.
