Title: Head Coach Reports To: Building Administrators and the Director of Athletics FLSA: Exempt Employment Terms Employment terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education's policies, procedures, and agreements. Extra-duty stipend position, in addition to the certified role, determined by district's salary schedule for the specific sport. Seasonal commitment based on the sport season, including pre-season, regular season, and post-season responsibilities. Annual appointment, subject to renewal based on performance and program needs. Vary by season and competition schedule; includes after-school hours, evenings, and occasional weekends. Position Overview The Head Coach leads and manages all aspects of a high school athletic program, including practices, game planning, and team development. This role promotes sportsmanship, academic success, self-esteem, and personal growth in student-athletes while ensuring compliance with school and state athletic regulations. The Head Coach also collaborates with staff, mentors assistant coaches, and supports the school's mission through positive leadership and effective communication. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education preferred. Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management. Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Knowledgeable of and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations. Abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R-I Board of Education. Abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Actively pursue the licensure to drive a school bus suitable for the sport they are coaching. Performance Responsibilities Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport. Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season. Works closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests. Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate. Maintains an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all uniforms and equipment as appropriate. Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork. Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted. Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his/her sport. Enforces discipline and sportsman-like behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students. Has a good working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport he or she is coaching. As a representative of the Poplar Bluff R-I School District, the coach will reflect a favorable impression of our school system to other schools and communities. Expectations Of Poplar Bluff Coaches Follow all policies set forth by the board of education. Follow all building and department rules and procedures. Have the desire to create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others to win. The desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the athletes. Possesses strong values and work ethic. Motivate those directly and indirectly associated with the program to have a supportive sense of ownership of the program. Promote the athletic program by strategically involving others, including parents and media. Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school's operation. Have the understanding and control required to respond to a total setting even during the most highly pitched emotional situation. Be organized and prepared. The coach remains flexible at all times, remaining constantly aware of the need for revision and change. Be a continuous student of the game, constantly searching for better methods, techniques, and strategies. Be dedicated and committed to the coaching profession. Take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse. Be thoroughly acquainted with the contest rules and be responsible for interpreting the rules to team members. Actively use their influence to enhance good sportsmanship among their spectators and instruct players in their sportsmanship responsibilities. Show respect and support for contest officials. Keep the Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions. Be a proactive host to opponents, treating them as guests. Inform players of the conduct expected of them in the locker room, other school facilities, on the floor or field, and the bus. Instruct athletes as to the potential dangers of participating in that sport. Properly condition players who are members of their squad. Turn off lights, lock doors, and ensure the building and equipment are secure. Physical Requirements/Environmental Factors Ability to work in a climate-controlled building, as well as in inclement weather. Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time. Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors. Sufficient hearing to understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone. Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands. Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and addressing groups. Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes. Able to perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee. Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy. The head coach will be evaluated by the Building Principal and Athletic Director at the end of the season.
