Physical Education Teacher - Elementary School

Position : Physical Education Teacher (Elementary 1st-5th Grade) Reports to : Principal and Assistant Principal Start Date : August 2026 Overview The Physical Education Teacher creates a classroom environment that promotes understanding of healthy body function and exercise. The role motivates students to cultivate fitness, emotional adjustment, and athletic skills, while discovering individual talents and supporting a collaborative, inclusive culture. Responsibilities Design challenging, engaging, universally designed lessons supporting learner variability. Instruct and assess students in Physical Education and Health Education. Assess student progress regularly and use data to plan instruction. Participate in developing and implementing new developmentally appropriate teaching techniques. Collaborate with the physical education team. Assist in planning school‑wide events supporting physical activity and health. Engage parents and families in their students’ learning. Attend and participate in school events outside regular hours. Fulfill other curriculum, instruction, and assessment duties as assigned. Use assessment data to set short‑ and long‑range goals. Maintain weekly gradebook and relevant data platforms. Analyze student data to improve instruction and make program recommendations. Adhere to the 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. workday, attendance policies, and timely communication of absences. Participate in weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings and contribute prepared materials and discussions. Attend a two‑week summer professional development in August. Seek additional professional development opportunities. Implement the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program. Create and sponsor an inclusive, age‑appropriate club. Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment. Communicate respectfully with students, staff, and families. Model inclusive, unbiased, and effective communication. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or Exercise Science (preferred). Knowledge of Adaptive PE and/or therapeutic recreational skills. 1–2 years of teaching experience in an urban school setting (preferred). Passage of required Praxis exams for Health & Physical Education (PreK‑12) in content and pedagogy for DC. Track record of teamwork and community involvement. Salary & Benefits Salary range: $60,000 – $92,000 per year. Additional allowances: $3,000 for leading a high‑level special education classroom; $2,000 for Spanish language proficiency. Benefits include health care, disability insurance, and a retirement plan (401(k) or continuation of the DCPS retirement plan). Contracts are renewed yearly based on evaluations and staff interest.
