Position Description: Ceramics Studio Technician Department: Academic Affairs Reports to: Departmental Chair Date: April 28, 2026 FLSA: Non-Exempt Status: Full Time During the Academic Year and Part Time in the Summer Months Months: 35 hours/week during the Academic year and 20 hours/week during the summer months, shared between the BFA, MFA, Pre-College, and Continuing Studies programs Basic Function: The Ceramics Studio Technician supports the effective operation of ceramics studio facilities by maintaining a safe, organized, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff. This role collaborates closely with faculty and program leadership to support curriculum delivery, student learning, and daily studio operations. The Technician provides technical expertise in ceramics processes, oversees equipment and materials, and supports student engagement through training and supervision. Responsibilities: Coordinate the maintenance and repair of kilns, wheels, and other ceramic equipment and furniture, including managing contracted services. Maintain records of repairs and servicing; Manage clay and glaze materials efficiently, including inventory control, ordering supplies, and organizing storage. Assist students in accessing and mixing materials for clay and glazes; Ensure the ceramics area is clean, safe, and compliant with safety protocols. Lead kiln loading, firing, and scheduling in collaboration with students and faculty; Prepare materials such as clay, glazes, and slips for classes and programmatic needs; Maintain and update the department's inventory of clay and glaze recipes, including testing and documenting results; Support students by providing training on equipment use, supervising student workers, and offering assistance during technical hours; Organize daily studio operations to meet the educational and institutional needs of the BFA, MFA, and Continuing Studies programs. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Ceramics, Studio Art, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required MFA or advanced study in ceramics preferred Experience: 2+ years of relevant experience in a ceramics studio, academic, or similar environment preferred Knowledge of ceramics processes, materials, equipment, and studio operations Experience operating and maintaining electric and gas kilns Familiarity with studio safety protocols and best practices Experience with standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office or Google Workspace Skills and Abilities: Ability to instruct students on the safe use of ceramics equipment and materials Strong organizational and inventory management skills Effective communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment Adaptability and problem-solving skills in a dynamic studio setting Commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive academic community Reliable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented Other duties: This job description provides a general overview of the position's responsibilities. Essential Functions & Work Environment This position requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in accordance with applicable federal and state law. Essential functions include, but are not limited to, maintaining and operating ceramics studio equipment, including kilns and wheels; managing clay and glaze materials and inventory; supporting students and faculty in a studio-based learning environment; training and supervising student workers; coordinating kiln loading and firing schedules; and communicating effectively with students, faculty, and staff in person and electronically. The role also requires standing, walking, and moving throughout studio spaces for extended periods; performing routine cleaning, maintenance, and organization of studio environments; and handling, transporting, and preparing materials and equipment. The work environment is primarily an on-site ceramics studio with frequent interaction with students and faculty. The role involves regular exposure to ceramics equipment, tools, materials, dust (including silica), heat, and noise typical of a studio environment and requires adherence to safety protocols and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. The position requires the ability to lift and move materials and equipment, generally up to 50 pounds, as well as to bend, reach, and navigate shared studio and storage spaces.
