Job Title: Animal Care Technician Job Description

The Animal Care Technician will observe and execute activities consistent with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Laboratory Methods, adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations and safety and health practices.

• Demonstrate knowledge of basic study design and execution.
• Execute key activities on a study following appropriate procedures.
• Administer test and control materials by various routes including gavage, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous.
• Collect samples and specimens.
• Provide animal care and husbandry, including changing racks, and providing feed and water.
• Clean cages, equipment, and work area. Decontaminate animal rooms, including operating sanitizing and sterilizing equipment.
• Gather experimental data, including temperatures, weights, clinical observations, and husbandry data, as required.
• Handle and restrain animals of various species (e.g., rodents, ferrets, dogs, non-human primates, rabbits, etc.) under animal biosafety levels 1, 2, and/or 3 containment procedures.
• Gather in-life and husbandry data for various study types (e.g., general toxicity, infectious disease, reproductive toxicity, in vivo cancer therapeutics), including body weights, clinical observations, and food consumption.
• Communicate with and update supervisor, group leads, and co-workers as needed.
• Record data in the data collection system.
• Observe, record, and report abnormal findings to the veterinarian.
• Review in-life and husbandry data, as required.
• Complete other duties as required.

• 0-3 years of animal handling experience in a laboratory setting.
• Ability to observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices requirements, and study protocols.
• Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize relevant MS Office Suite Products.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to include an N95 respirator or PAPR for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Ability to work overtime when necessary, including rotating weekends and holidays.

• Associate’s degree or equivalent.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of standard scientific principles, theories, and concepts.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new tasks.

The position involves working in an ABSL-2/ABSL-3 facility within a laboratory setting, requiring adherence to specific safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment. The role may require working extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as part of a team-focused environment.

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Birmingham,AL.
