Pharmacy Supervisor

In conjunction with the Pharmacy Director, coordinates pharmacy services and ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal clinical services on a daily basis. The pharmacy supervisor facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes through the use of safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies. Provides training and education to pharmacists and other healthcare professionals regarding pharmaceutical care and pharm economics. Supervises and instructs pharmacists, residents and pharmacy students. Participates with Director of Pharmacy in providing guidance to pharmacy staff regarding current Joint Commission, state and other regulatory standards.

Job Specific Duties

1. Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care. Adherence to hospital plan with regard to organizational ethics and patient rights.
2. Demonstrations caring behaviors that affect patient/family/staff/physician satisfaction (courtesy/kindness/helpful/empathy)
3. Assess drug therapy in terms of: Therapeutic appropriateness based on but not limited to age, weight, diagnosis, current medical condition Interactions/incompatibles/duplications Patient safety Cost effective therapies.
4. Receives, prioritizes, interprets and completes medications/IV order entry via computer terminal/workstation; works without supervision but uses judgment to recognize problems which should be referred to the Director of Pharmacy.
5. Dispenses correct medication, strength, dose form and is involved in infrequent medication errors requiring use of Occurrence Report.
6. Documents completion of order review by filing complete order under user specific log in/password into scanning software 100% of the time. Links patient orders to correct hospital number 100% of the time.
7. Prepares intravenous admixtures/other sterile products under the laminar flow hood utilizing aseptic technique 100% of the time; correct IV fluid/additives to match the label are utilized; documents 100% of labels with appropriate expiration date; maintains orderly condition and clean work surface of laminar flow hood at all times; labels preparations 100% of the time in compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Follows all requirements of USP 797 guidelines 100% of the time.
8. Fills and/or checks orders filled by Pharmacy Technicians for correct labeling, drug, number, and quality of doses. Ensures medication barcode is intact for hospital staff usability.
9. As needed/ordered provides patient/family members education re: medications ordered, precautions, etc. Uses proper resources to answer questions from medical staff/patients.
10. Provides clinical interventions through communication with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals; provides drug information, dosage calculation and resolves problems regarding medication orders and documents via EPIC clinical intervention forms.
11. Participates in meetings, committees and continuing education to improve individual, departmental and organizational performance.
12. Conducts/participates in monitors as assigned related to the primary aspect of medication use (MUE); documents finding in an objective manner.
13. Works in conjunction with the director/manager/supervisors of other patient care areas to resolve day-to-day problems related to pharmacy services; works independently and refers those un-reconciled problems to the Pharmacy Director.
14. Maintains effective workflow of the unit, e.g., effective in communication with pharmacy technicians/students in direction of work activities. Helps to resolve personnel conflicts.
15. Effectively organizes and prioritizes projects and completes each in a timely manner.
16. Educates dept staff, hospital staff, medical staff on issues/topics are needed and/or requested; research topics and presents to staff in an effective manner.
17. Serves as a preceptor or educational resource for new employees/students.
18. As needed, prepares admixtures containing cytotoxic drugs within a biological safety cabinet (BSC); adheres strictly to cytotoxic materials handling guidelines of the Hospital; reports cytotoxic spills per policy; follows standards as stated for preparation and labeling of IV admixture/other sterile products while working within the BSC.
19. Maintains correct controlled substance counts in the perpetual inventory log with every transaction. Immediately resolves/investigates discrepancies. Refers any un-resolvable discrepancies to Director of Pharmacy. Evaluates the monthly auditing reports for the hospital Diversion Team.
20. Keeps up with current Joint Commission standards and how they apply to pharmacy. Provides guidance to staff regarding current Joint Commission, state and other regulatory standards.
21. Directs routine operations within the pharmacy department.
22. Performs all duties as a staff pharmacist when called upon by the Director of Pharmacy to serve as a staff pharmacist.
23. Prepares evaluations, interviews, provides counseling and discipline as needed, and completes paperwork relating to personnel issues. Adjusts staffing as needed based on productivity requirements. Serves as a resource person to employees.
24. Supervises daily operations within the pharmacy to insure that employees are performing their job duties accurately and in a timely manner.

Hospital Wide Requirements

1. Observes department/hospital policies concerning smoking, telephone use, dress code and other rules governing conduct while at work. Follows established hospital guidelines with regards to appropriate access of information.
2. Meets hospital wide and department specific educational requirements. Attends all annual mandates / required in-services: (i.e. CPR, Safety, infection control), CPR current if required. Maintains a current Employee Health screening status as per hospital policy.
3. Utilizes hospital/departmental manuals appropriately. Knowledgeable of location and use of emergency response equipment. Responds to Emergency Preparedness Plans according to hospital policy.
4. Attends and participates in a minimum of 3/4ths of required meetings such as departmental or committee meetings. Maintains inter and intra departmental communication.
5. Employee demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to the Code of Conduct. Employee conduct reflects the company's values and a commitment to the Code of Conduct
6. Maintains a safe and orderly work area. Cleans equipment as needed. Maintains equipment in safe and proper working condition through correct use and appropriate notification of malfunction.
7. When indicated, completes occurrence reports in a timely manner.
8. Complies with and helps to enforce safety and health policies. Applies appropriate ergonomic principles to reduce the potential for job related injuries.
9. Implements all policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risks of acquiring and transmitting infections among patients, employees, and others.

12. Identifies self-improvement/department improvement needs and seeks appropriate resources. Accepts responsibility for action and omissions.

Qualifications

Experience: 3 years hospital pharmacy experience

Education: B.S. or Pharm D

Special Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills; word processing/spreadsheet computer applications, compounding equipment, pharmacy automation systems

Licensure: Licensure as a Registered Pharmacist by the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy
