HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR – CLOSED LANDFILLS

County of San Diego – Department of Public Works Job Overview We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain County closed landfills and burn sites. The role supports regulatory compliance, protects public health and safety, and performs major maintenance projects, operates heavy equipment, and completes minor maintenance tasks using hand tools. A strong work ethic and commitment to safety are required. Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, and skid‑steer loaders. Maintain closed landfill and burn site operations, ensuring compliance with regulations. Perform manual labor duties with hand tools and assist in minor maintenance projects. Safely conduct tree trimming and motor sweeper operations while receiving premium pay. Participate in periodic practical exams and safety training. Qualifications Valid California Class B driver’s license with tank and air‑brake endorsements, current medical card, and ability to keep them in force. Two years of experience in road construction or repair including operation of motor‑graded equipment, chippers, forklifts, skid‑steer loaders, backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks; or one year full‑time experience as a Road Maintenance Worker with the County of San Diego. Knowledge of safety procedures and regulatory requirements for landfill operations. Physical ability to perform manual labor and operate heavy equipment. Required Licenses & Certifications California Class B driver’s license with tank and air‑brake endorsements. Current medical certificate. Compliance with random drug testing per DOT guidelines. Benefits & Compensation Base salary commensurate with qualifications. Future salary increases: 5.33% in June 2026; 5.23% in June 2027. Recruitment bonus of $1,250. Additional $1,250 bonus after successful probation completion. Employee referral reward program available. Hourly premium of $0.50 while performing tree trimming and $0.25 while operating a motor sweeper. Technical Exam The practical exam evaluates candidates on the following equipment: Ten‑yard dump truck Loader Shovels and hand tools Fiber roll Either a backhoe or a skid‑steer, based on applicant preference Applicants must bring a valid California Class B (or higher) driver’s license with tank and air‑brake endorsements during the exam. Candidates without such a license cannot participate. Application Process Practical exams and interviews are conducted on an ongoing basis. Additional steps include background checks, fingerprinting, and pre‑employment medical screening.
