This role is responsible for the security and safety of Markel associates and for protecting Markel property from theft, sabotage, fire and accidents. The Security Associate will investigate and write reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards, and other security‑related issues. The position will provide assistance to associates, customers, and visitors within departmental guidelines, maintain a positive contact between internal and external customers, and proactively manage the work processes of the Security Desk to ensure compliance with internal and departmental safety policies at campus locations. Responsibilities Secure and safeguard Markel associates and property, guarding against theft, sabotage, fire and accidents. Investigate incidents, accidents, suspicious activity, safety and fire hazards, and document findings in reports. Provide assistance to associates, customers and visitors in accordance with departmental guidelines and maintain positive relationships. Manage the Security Desk operations to ensure compliance with internal and departmental policies of the campus Security & Safety environment. Apply safety and security knowledge for rapid decision‑making during emergencies, follow procedures, and promptly report to the Security Director or Manager. Handle emergency calls (medical, fire, police) with calmness, gather essential information, and coordinate required actions. Maintain and organize electronic and paper records, route emails and documents per departmental guidelines, and monitor workload to meet service standards. Identify deficiencies and recommend process improvements to increase departmental efficiency. Qualifications Time & Attendance: Full‑time, 37.5 hrs weekly, 7:30am – 5:30pm, Monday‑Thursday, Friday. Education: High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred. Courses: Criminal Justice, Public Safety and/or Emergency Management. Certification: Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Armed Security Officer license; Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid. Work Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in law enforcement, public safety or corporate security. Skill Sets: Excellent written and oral communication; strong organization and time‑management; knowledge of BRIVO ACS and EagleEye VMS; intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Outlook, Word); strong analytical and problem‑solving; effective teamwork; flexibility and attention to detail; ability to work in high‑stress, emergency situations; physical capability to lift 75lbs, walk 1mile, run 150yards, and climb five flights of stairs.
