Shift Supervisor at the Adult Residential Center

Johnson County Department of Corrections is looking for qualified applicants to fill the position of Shift Supervisor at the Adult Residential Center in New Century, Kansas. The Corrections Shift Supervisor serves as a role model as well as maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, staff, and department of a 24/7 operation. By ensuring that the policies and procedures of the facility are followed, the Shift Supervisor provides oversight of standard operations of a weapon free, hands-off, open campus environment serving criminal offenders transitioning to the community.

Essential duties include:

• Supervising assigned personnel and team members; communicating policies, procedures, rules and regulations to assigned staff; ensuring that Officers adhere to departmental rules and regulations; assigning tasks and functions; ensuring that Officers have and properly use their equipment; reviewing reports and write-ups submitted by Officers for accuracy before filing or submitting to supervisor; completing performance appraisals on assigned personnel and team members; gathering information, reviewing information and documents incidents used for disciplinary actions; assisting in the training and development of staff by counseling them on the proper methods of dealing with clients in order to prevent or resolve problems using evidence based practices.
• Performing administrative duties; conducting, verifying, and/or assisting in daily resident population counts, documenting and taking action on discrepancies; conducting or verifying the daily inspection for cleanliness and damage; following procedures required to initiate the correction of substandard conditions by completing work orders for needed repairs or replacements; directing personnel to complete cleaning duties; attending or conducting daily shift conferences concerned with keeping personnel informed about the status of the facility, personnel, and clients; keeping required records; briefing successor at change of shift; writing reports on resident incidents, lock downs, investigations, and repair requests; documenting staff growth and development; may serve on resident disciplinary committee.
• Performing functions deriving from resident supervision; evaluating resident disciplinary problems after obtaining information from Officers; ordering disciplinary action; ensuring that the order is implemented; completing the accompanying documentation; supervising resident searches for contraband according to established procedures; assisting officers during de-escalation interventions; directing and/or assisting Officers during emergency or Officer assistance crises, evaluating the situation and coordinating the necessary action.
• In conjunction with departmental training staff, ensuring training and development of staff; participating in the development, implementation, and presentation of In-Service training for staff; reviewing new-hire checklists and identifying staff training needs and progress; directly providing mentoring, coaching and counseling to staff; identifying potential problems and their impact on staff morale.
• Responding immediately and directing staff during emergencies as directed by emergency procedure guidelines; providing leadership and supervision as incident command; donning protective equipment; restraining or restricting the actions of combative or disruptive clients using only necessary force; summoning assistance from backup personnel; administering first aid or CPR; conducting follow-up and critical analysis of incidents.
• Ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; taking initiative to propose new policies and revisions to policies.

Job Requirements

Minimum job requirements include an associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development or relevant field; three (3) years of Corrections Officer I/IA experience or equivalent experience working in a correctional, residential, therapeutic or relevant setting; successfully pass a criminal history check; and possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.

Applicant must submit to and pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and pass a physical ability test prior to employment.

Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development or relevant field; two (2) years of Corrections Officer II experience or equivalent experience leading, directing, supervising, or coordinating the work of others is preferred.

Experience may be substituted for education.
