Registered Nurse Mother BabyThe Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The focus is on creating a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. The RN honors patients' minds, bodies, and spirits by respecting human dignity and the uniqueness of everyone. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research as well as policies and procedures. Clinical decision-making incorporates all four phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through helping relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care activities on the unit. This includes nursing rounds, assessments, and treatments. The RN facilitates admission, transfer, and discharge activities. Educating patients and families is a key component of care coordination and individualized treatment planning. The RN performs and documents comprehensive assessments in accordance with scope of practice and policies. Consideration of the patient's culture, age, and developmental level is essential. The RN develops a problem list, prioritizing patient needs based on input from the inter-professional team. Actions and interventions are designed relevant to the patient's culture and age. The RN determines desired outcomes in coordination with the patient and family. Patient care therapies and procedures are implemented autonomously within the established policies and guidelines. The RN explains procedures, treatments, and processes to patients and families. The RN initiates actions to alleviate the patient's stress and discomfort. Changes in patient condition are recognized and communicated appropriately. Ongoing assessments and responses to procedures and therapies are documented using the nursing process. The plan of care is revised and coordinated based on patient and family responses. Mentoring other staff members and facilitating the orientation of new staff are part of the role. The RN acts as a role model and resource to others in a clinical role. Participation in unit-based activities supporting organizational values is expected. The RN promotes a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions. Nursing excellence is assured in accordance with accepted standards and evidence-based practice. Active participation in quality improvement activities and core measures is required. A holistic perspective regarding patient care is employed. Critical thinking and creativity are demonstrated in handling patient issues. Safety training programs are attended, with knowledge of responsibilities related to safety and national patient safety goals. Compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy are essential attributes. Positive customer relations are ensured through caring behaviors. Sensitivity in managing difficult or emotional situations is necessary. Prompt and courteous responses to customer requests are expected. Educational needs of patients are identified and addressed according to their level of comprehension. Concise and accurate reports are verbalized to support continuity of care. Facilitating the patient discharge process in a timely manner is part of the role. Input into patient/nurse assignments is provided considering available staffing and patient acuity. Education requirements include an ADN or ASN, with a preference for BSN.
