This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while supporting a fast-paced clinical laboratory or patient service center. You will handle the full lifecycle of specimens—from collection and labeling to processing and preparation for transport—while ensuring strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and quality standards. The position also involves troubleshooting workflow issues, assisting with training, and making recommendations to improve efficiency and patient experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles in a high-volume setting.
• Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, including those who are nervous or anxious.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure accurate patient and test information before collection.
• Accurately label all specimens, including applying computer-generated or manual labels, and verify that requisitions and specimens match with 100% accuracy.
• Centrifuge specimens and operate centrifuge equipment safely and correctly as required by test orders.
• Split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens in accordance with specific test protocols and laboratory procedures.
• Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain sample integrity.
• Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to preserve specimen quality and regulatory compliance.
• Fully understand and follow physicians’ orders, including special handling requirements and test instructions.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all laboratory safety procedures, including decontamination processes and proper handling of biohazard materials.
• Record maintenance data and perform basic equipment checks to support reliable lab operations.
• Update patient information and documentation accurately in laboratory systems and related records.
• Answer telephone calls, relay laboratory results, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and participate in making recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen processing.
• Support training and onboarding efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.
• Provide courteous, patient-focused service during all interactions, including with pediatric and hospital-based patients.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED, with 2–4 years of overall experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture using both straight needles and butterfly needles in high-volume environments.
• Strong specimen collection and handling skills, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• Ability to accurately label specimens, match requisitions to specimen tubes, and maintain 100% accuracy in patient and test identification.
• Experience operating centrifuges and performing centrifugation of specimens according to protocol.
• Knowledge of proper specimen storage, including temperature control and appropriate container selection.
• Understanding and practical application of OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety procedures.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience working with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of specimen handling and documentation.
• Ability to work independently and manage tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume setting.
• Comfortable answering phones and professionally relaying laboratory results and information.
• Reliable and consistent work habits, including punctuality and dependability.
• Effective communication and patient interaction skills, including the ability to explain procedures clearly and calmly.

• Experience working in hospital environments or high-volume clinical laboratories.
• Previous exposure to pediatric specimen collection and patient handling.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot workflow issues and suggest process improvements.
• Strong patient customer service skills with a focus on empathy and clear communication.
• Comfort working with nervous or anxious patients and maintaining a calm, reassuring demeanor.
• Willingness to learn new procedures, adapt to updated protocols, and participate in ongoing training.
• Interest in gaining hands-on clinical experience in a professional laboratory environment.
• Motivation to grow into long-term opportunities and take on additional responsibilities over time.

This role is based in a clinical laboratory or patient service center that operates in a fast-paced, high-volume specimen collection environment. You will spend much of the day on your feet, standing for extended periods while performing blood draws and other specimen collections. The position involves frequent direct patient interaction, including working with hospital and pediatric populations, and requires consistent use of safety and personal protective equipment in compliance with laboratory and regulatory standards. You will work with laboratory information systems, EMR systems, Microsoft Office tools, and standard lab equipment such as centrifuges. The environment emphasizes teamwork, reliability, and adherence to established procedures, while providing hands-on clinical experience and exposure to high-volume lab operations with potential for long-term growth.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Eureka, CA.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Eureka,CA.
