Associate Software Engineer

SUMMARY:

Writes or updates code to deliver on stated objectives, standards and performance, working agent-first with AI coding tools. Contributes to technical direction to define the solution or product, ensures code standards and approaches are maintained, performs peer reviews and responds to questions, bugs or problems. Serves on the Spec Ops team, a fast-paced, agent-first team of high-agency builders that supplements ABOUT's product engineering teams, takes on special projects, and maintains and advances the company's agentic engineering program and Agentic Software Development Lifecycle (ADLC). This role prioritizes attitude and aptitude over depth in any particular technology; the successful candidate learns new technology quickly.

This role is based in our St. Paul MN office and requires an in-office presence 3-4 days a week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

• Serves as a team member to understand product deliverables and outcomes; contributes to technical direction to define the technology and solution.
• Writes, updates or modifies code to deliver stated objectives, performance and outcomes, using AI coding agents as a primary means of delivery.
• Applies engineering judgment to agent output — reviews, tests and corrects generated code rather than accepting it uncritically.
• Helps maintain and advance the team’s agentic engineering program and Agentic Software Development Lifecycle, including agent workflows, prompts, skills and supporting tooling.
• Takes on special projects with limited direction, learning unfamiliar technology quickly to solve the problem at hand.
• Participates in peer review or analysis to reduce or eliminate causes of failures, bugs or unexpected results.
• Provides research and feedback to resolve management and client questions and requirements.
• Analyzes and reviews software and products on an ongoing and as needed basis to determine trends, draw conclusions, interpret findings, and presents results, proposals and recommendations to management.
• Ensures the accuracy of software, reports, and related details through audits, queries, and operational reviews; works with teams to resolve discrepancies.
• Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Need to Have :

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related
• Exposure to software development experience
• 1+ years of software development experience

Nice to Have :

• Enrolled in master’s program for information technology, software development, or similar.
• Experience extending or customizing agentic development tooling (agents, skills, MCP servers, CI automation).
• Personal or open-source projects that show initiative and self-directed learning.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Required Knowledge:

• An understanding of principles, practices and techniques of software development.
• Approaches to perform peer review or analysis.
• Working knowledge of at least one high-level programming language, such as C#, Java or TypeScript.
• Agentic coding — using AI coding agents to plan, write, test and review software.
• A willingness and ability to pick up new languages, frameworks and tools quickly.
• Preferred experience working on web application in a cloud-based architecture.
• Technology project management principles and approaches.
• Various methods to identify and resolve software failures, bugs or unexpected results.
• Exposure to methods and approaches to analyze and improve software performance.
• Principles and practices to serving as an effective project team member.
• Able to effectively communicate with staff, coworkers, and customers.
• Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Required Skills:

• Performing software development in a variety of areas, using AI coding agents where they add leverage.
• Framing a problem clearly enough to direct an AI agent to a working, reviewable solution.
