What You’ll Do

The Manager, Electrical Engineering will serve as a technical expert within the Electrical Engineering team of our global Engineering Centre of Excellence, with a primary focus on the US market.

You will provide electrical engineering leadership across the development, design, construction, commissioning and operational stages of utility-scale solar, battery energy storage and wind projects. Your work will span low-voltage and medium-voltage generation systems, collection systems, substations, transmission infrastructure and grid interconnections.

You will also support large-load and data center-adjacent generation and interconnection initiatives where renewable generation, storage and grid infrastructure serve high-density loads.

This role requires close collaboration with Procurement, Construction, Asset Services, Commercial Engineering, Grid and Interconnection, IT, Digitalization, Quality and Innovation teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the development and design of LV and MV electrical systems for renewable energy facilities, including 1,500 Vdc collection systems, 480/600 Vac auxiliary and inverter systems, 34.5 kV collection systems, and conceptual HV evacuation and interconnection infrastructure.
• Perform and review power system studies, including load flow, voltage regulation, short-circuit and equipment duty, arc flash, grounding, insulation coordination, cable ampacity, protection coordination, relay settings, and control and operating philosophies.
• Partner with the Grid and Interconnection team to define requirements for compliance with applicable utilities, ISO and RTO standards, IEEE 1547 and 1547.1, NERC reliability standards, and FERC interconnection milestones.
• Size and specify electrical components, including AC and DC cabling, inverter and auxiliary transformers, MV switchgear, ring main units, reclosers, relays, combiner equipment, station service, UPS and DC systems, and reactive power compensation equipment.
• Lead electrical design optimization and value-engineering efforts, evaluating collection system topology, voltage selection, conductor and transformer sizing, DC-to-AC ratios, equipment standardization and constructability.
• Develop technical and commercial recommendations that reduce capital costs and levelized cost of energy without compromising safety, reliability, quality or code compliance.
• Prepare and review scopes of work, technical specifications, single-line diagrams, layouts, technical notes and decision papers across concept, pre-FEED, FEED and execution phases.
• Review electrical engineering documents produced by EPC contractors at the 30%, 60% and issued-for-construction stages.
• Verify compliance with NEC, NESC, applicable UL standards, NRTL certification requirements, AHJ comments and permit conditions.
• Develop and continuously improve engineering standards, functional technical specifications, equipment data sheets, digital files, quality requirements and health and safety guidelines.
• Provide technical support during project development, acquisition and due diligence, including the review of design proposals and Independent Engineer reports.
• Support technical negotiations with EPC contractors involving electrical scope, equipment specifications, factory and site acceptance testing, and commissioning requirements.
• Support pre-commissioning, commissioning and energization activities, including protection-setting verification, witness testing, punch-list management and Permission to Operate activities.
• Assist Asset Services and Operations and Maintenance teams with electrical reliability, fault analysis, troubleshooting and critical technical issues.
• Support the qualification and development of US equipment suppliers, considering lead times, domestic-content requirements, quality and lifecycle performance.
• Confirm that electrical systems are designed, installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with company, utility, quality, safety and AHJ requirements.

Who We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, power engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program, or an international equivalent.
• At least 10 years of electrical engineering experience in the power sector.
• Significant experience designing LV and MV electrical systems for utility-scale renewable energy facilities.
• Experience with an Engineer of Record, Owner’s Engineer, EPC contractor or similarly accountable engineering organization.
• Demonstrated experience reviewing or approving detailed designs and issued-for-construction deliverables.
• Experience supporting the engineering, construction, testing and commissioning of utility-scale solar, wind, battery storage, substations, overhead lines or underground collection systems.
• Strong working knowledge of HV systems from 69 kV to 500 kV, including substations, interconnection facilities, AIS and GIS technologies, single-line diagrams, layouts, and protection and control systems.
• Advanced knowledge of applicable US electrical codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, IEEE 80, IEEE 519, IEEE 1547 and 1547.1, IEEE 1584, and the IEEE C37, C57 and C62 series.
• Familiarity with applicable UL standards, including UL 1741 SA/SB, UL 3703, UL 3741, UL 9540/9540A, UL 891 and UL 1558.
• Practical experience with AHJ plan reviews, NRTL listing requirements and field evaluations.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, quantify and defend design alternatives that reduce cost or schedule while maintaining safety, reliability and compliance.
• Experience performing electrical power-system modeling and detailed electrical design using ETAP, CYMCAP and AutoCAD.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical matters to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
• Ability to travel approximately 20% to 30%.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

• Professional Engineer license in one or more US states, with the ability to obtain licensure by comity in additional jurisdictions.
• Data center electrical experience, including MV distribution, N+1 and 2N redundancy, UPS and standby-generation interfaces, and generation or storage serving large concentrated loads.
• Experience with front-of-meter and behind-the-meter generation and storage configurations.
• Familiarity with CDEGS, XGSLab, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, PSS/E, PVsyst, ArcGIS or similar applications.
• Experience delivering projects under both ANSI/IEEE and IEC design frameworks.
• On-site installation, testing, commissioning and energization experience.
• NABCEP certification.
• Experience working for an international renewable energy or engineering organization and managing multiple projects across time zones.

The base salary range represents the anticipated compensation for this position. The final offer will reflect factors including the selected candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, work location and internal equity.
