Job Description

Job Description

Position Overview

Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. is seeking a dependable and mechanically inclined individual to join our laboratory machine shop as a Saw & CNC Machine Operator.

The primary responsibility of this position is cutting and preparing metal samples for laboratory testing. Daily work includes operating metal-cutting band saws, abrasive saws, belt sanders, and other shop equipment to section plates, forgings, castings, weldments, and other metal components into test blanks and specimens.

The position also provides an opportunity to assist with basic CNC mill and lathe machining operations, material handling, equipment upkeep, and other general machine shop activities. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys physical work and working with machinery in a machine shop environment.

The position will initially include a 1–3 month temporary trial period so both the employee and Hurst Metallurgical can determine whether the position is a good long-term fit.

  • Use forklifts and other approved material-handling equipment to move and stage heavy metal stock.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance.
  • Keep saws, machines, floors, chip trays, workbenches, and surrounding areas clean and orderly.
  • Notify the Supervisor of equipment problems, damaged tooling, material discrepancies, or unsafe conditions.
  • Follow established safety procedures, work instructions, and quality requirements.

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in a machine shop, fabrication shop, manufacturing facility, metalworking environment, or similar hands-on setting is preferred.
  • Experience operating metal-cutting band saws is strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working around industrial machinery and handling metal material.
  • Basic math and measurement skills.
  • Ability to use or learn calipers, micrometers, and other measuring equipment.
  • Ability to follow written work instructions and verbal directions in English.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to troubleshoot basic equipment issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and material identification.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work independently once trained while asking questions when needed.
  • Willingness to perform routine cleaning and equipment upkeep as part of the job.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.
