Summary:

The Production Operator I (PO 1) is responsible for performing entry-level manufacturing and assembly operations that support the production of electronic assemblies and finished products. This role performs component preparation, manual assembly, equipment operation, product verification, and material handling while following established work instructions, quality standards, and production schedules.

Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, Materials, and Production leadership, the Production Operator I supports safe, efficient, and high-quality manufacturing operations while developing proficiency in production processes within a high-reliability electronics manufacturing environment.

Essential Functions:

• Perform entry-level manufacturing and assembly operations by following approved work
• instructions, production routers, assembly drawings, and supervisor direction.
• Assemble electronic and mechanical components using hand tools, fixtures, and automated
• equipment while meeting established quality and productivity requirements.
• Prepare components, materials, and workstations to support scheduled production activities.
• Verify work orders, bills of material (BOMs), assembly drawings, and production documentation
• prior to beginning assigned work.
• Perform basic visual inspections to identify workmanship concerns, missing components, or
• product defects and report issues to the appropriate personnel.
• Accurately complete production documentation, work order transactions, and manufacturing
• records as required.
• Maintain product identification, material traceability, and work-in-process (WIP) accuracy
• throughout assigned production activities.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by following 5S, ESD, and company safety
• requirements.
• Work collaboratively with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Materials personnel to
• support production schedules and customer requirements.
• Participate in cross-training and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety,
• quality, productivity, and operational efficiency.
• Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, fixtures, and manufacturing equipment
• in accordance with established procedures.

• Manufacturing Assembly: Ability to perform basic manufacturing and assembly operations in accordance with work instructions.
• Component Identification: Ability to identify electronic components, materials, and part markings.
• Hand Tool Operation: Ability to safely use hand tools, fixtures, and basic manufacturing equipment.
• Manufacturing Documentation: Ability to accurately complete production documentation and work order transactions.
• Document Interpretation: Ability to read and follow Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, routers, and work instructions.
• Quality Awareness: Ability to identify basic workmanship issues and follow quality standards.
• Material Traceability: Ability to maintain accurate product identification and work-in-process (WIP) traceability.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to perform manufacturing tasks accurately while maintaining quality standards.
• Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Materials teams.
• Adaptability: Ability to learn new manufacturing processes and adjust to changing production priorities.
• Continuous Improvement: Commitment to supporting process improvements that enhance safety, quality, and productivity.
• Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safe work practices, ESD controls, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Technical Proficiency: Basic proficiency using manufacturing systems, electronic work instructions, and computer applications.
• Time Management: Ability to complete assigned work efficiently while meeting production schedules.

Qualifications:

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

• Certifications:

• IPC-A-610 Awareness
• Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt

• Experience:

• Previous manufacturing or assembly experience preferred.
• Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) experience preferred.
• Experience working in a production or manufacturing environment is beneficial but not required.
• Basic computer skills and ability to navigate manufacturing software and electronic work instructions.
• Ability to read and interpret work instructions, assembly drawings, routers, and bills of material.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality products.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods during the work shift.
• Ability to sit for extended periods when performing inspection, testing, administrative, or computer-based tasks.
• Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, inspect, manipulate, assemble, or operate equipment and materials.
• Ability to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements.
• Ability to reach, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, crouch, and/or climb as required.
• Ability to visually inspect products, components, assemblies, documentation, and computer displays with or without corrective lenses.
• Ability to distinguish colors, markings, symbols, and other visual indicators when required by the position.
• Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, machinery, or material handling devices as authorized.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to work in close proximity to production equipment, moving machinery, and material handling operations while maintaining situational awareness.
• Ability to wear and properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) and ESD protection devices.
• Ability to maintain physical stamina necessary to meet production, quality, and operational requirements.

• Work requires the ability to maintain attention to detail, concentration, and accuracy while performing routine and non-routine tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Employees must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, interpret job related documentation, apply established procedures, and make decisions within defined guidelines.
• The role requires effective problem-solving, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while adapting to changing production demands.
• Employees must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other departments, maintain focus despite interruptions, and consistently meet safety, quality, and productivity expectations.

Work Environment:

• Work is performed within an electronics manufacturing environment and may involve exposure to moderate noise levels, fluctuating temperatures, and proximity to production equipment, soldering operations, and automated machinery. Duties may require standing, walking, bending, or repetitive motions for extended periods, as well as lifting or moving materials as job responsibilities dictate. Employees may enter clean or controlled areas and are required to follow all environmental, safety, ESD, and equipment-handling procedures. This includes the use of SMTC-provided ESD-safe items such as foot straps, wrist straps, and smocks when working in designated areas. Employees must be able to remain attentive and compliant with all operational, safety, and quality requirements while working on or near the production floor.
