Wound Care RN - Flexible Scheduling & Healing Impact

Position Overview The Wound Care Registered Nurse at the San Francisco VA Medical Center is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to Veterans with acute, chronic, and complex wounds. The nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates wound care treatment plans while collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to promote healing, prevent complications, and improve patient outcomes. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Basic Requirements English Language Proficiency. Proficiency in basic written and spoken English as required by federal law. Graduate of a professionally accredited nursing school. Program must be accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or a master's level bridge program that has completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Upon state license, temporary appointment may transition to permanent after program completion. Foreign graduates must hold current, full, active registration and may require formal degree equivalency validation from an accepted equivalent evaluation agency such as ICD. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration. Valid state licensure in the United States or its territories. Candidates lacking licensure but meeting educational requirements may be appointed as Graduate Nurse Technicians on a temporary basis while pursuing licensure. Grandfathering Provision All persons currently employed in VHA under the 0610 series and performing the duties described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification. Grade Determinations Nurse I, Level I Scope: Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies. Education: Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing. Nurse I, Level II Scope: Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technically competent practice in providing care to clients with basic or complex conditions. Education: ADN or Diploma with 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level I, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional nursing experience required. Nurse I, Level III Scope: Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self‑directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations. Education: Options include ADN or Diploma with 2 years of professional nursing experience (one year equivalent to Level II), BSN with 1 year of equivalent experience, a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) with no additional experience, or a Master’s in a related field with BSN and no additional experience. Nurse II Scope: Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Education: Options include BSN with 2 years of professional nursing experience equivalent to Level III, MSN with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Level III, a Master’s in a related field with BSN and equivalent experience, a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience, or a Doctoral in a related field with BSN and no additional experience. Nurse III Scope: Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. Education: Options include MSN with 2 years of specialized nursing experience (one year equivalent to Level II), a Master’s in a related field with BSN and two years of specialized nursing experience, a Doctoral degree in Nursing with one year of equivalent experience, or a Doctoral in a related field with BSN and one year of equivalent experience. *Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees. Preferred Experience Wound Care Certification such as WCC, CWCN, or CWON. Experience in medical‑surgical, long‑term care, outpatient, or specialty wound care. Salary Grade 1, Levels 1‑3: $153,887 – $204,663 annually Grade 2: $176,969 – $228,000 annually Grade 3: $194,665 – $228,000 annually Physical Requirements This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. Tasks may involve long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. The incumbent must be mature, flexible, sensible, and able to work effectively in stressful situations, shifting priorities as needed. Occasional travel and flexible scheduling may be required. Telework is position dependent and requires appropriate approvals; it is not guaranteed.
