The Surgical Technologist serves as a primary scrub person or assistant for operative procedures.

Job Responsibilities:

• 35% Surgical Prep:
• Scrubbing into cases.
• Make sure instruments and supplies are available for the scheduled case.
• Setting up cases ensuring that all instruments are thoroughly sterilized.
• Maintain the sterile field during case set up.
• Alerts the circulating nurse of any identified risks or variance from standard operating procedures.
• 35% During surgical cases:
• Passes instruments.
• Assists physician as needed.
• May be asked to assist physician to cut suture material.
• May be asked to apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
• Instrument, sponge and sharps counts.
• Maintain sterile field throughout case.
• Draping and assist circulating RN with patient positioning.
• Collaborates with the circulating nurse to carry out appropriate interventions.
• 20% Post case clean up:
• Works with circulating nurse, and orderlies to perform post-case cleaning duties.
• Is responsible for gross decontamination of instruments including breaking down instruments for further cleaning in Central Sterile Processing.
• Responsible for following all standards for instrument transport and return to Central Sterile.
• Will notify appropriate leader if there are any damaged instruments at the end of the case.
• Ensures surgical suite is disinfected and ready for the next procedure.
• Check par levels and ensure room is fully stocked for the next case.
• 10% Hospital policies and procedures:
• Completes all mandatory hospital education.
• Maintains compliance with all HR and Employee Health requirements.
• Follows all safe practices in the OR and completes the age specific annual assessment of competency documents.

Skills:

Required Skills & Experience:

• Seven (7) years of experience.

Required Education:

• Technical Diploma from Surgical technologist accredited program.
• OR Comparable military training.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

• BLS-Certified Surgical Tech (CST) certification.
