Phlebotomist

Summary The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties: troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Position Responsibilities Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Properly explain the process of venipuncture or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear, courteous manner. Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand all physician orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correctness. Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling them, and following procedures to maintain specimen integrity for transport. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual departmental trainings. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Minimum Qualifications Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in some states). Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. 2–4 years of experience (as mentioned).
