Paraprofessional - Tier II (Extended Transition Program)

Summary Provides support to the lead teacher and assists students with individual physical, social, academic, and other needs. Responsibilities Provide support to a child with a disability in the classroom, playground, hallway, restroom, nurse's office, gymnasium, other specified areas on a school campus, transportation situations, or community‑based educational settings. Assist teachers and related service personnel in implementing the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Assist in the personal care of the child (e.g., toileting, diaper changes, personal hygiene, restroom care, tube feedings, catheterizations) and participate in specific training related to each procedure as needed. Ensure the safety of the child at all times. Provide support necessary because of physical, health, or behavioral concerns to enable a child to access educational programs. Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher. Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of each student's needs, interests, and abilities. Operate and care for instructional equipment used in the classroom. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. Conduct learning exercises and assist with small‑ and large‑group activities. Participate in daily and long‑range lesson and classroom activity planning. Alert the teacher to the special needs of individual children. Provide escort and assistance to children as necessary. Help maintain individual records for each child. Assist the teacher in maintaining neat work and study areas. Assist students with adaptive behavior skills and personal care. Assist students with transition activities. Develop cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance; meet job responsibilities competently and within deadlines. Follow the legal and ethical standards of confidentiality of information. Perform all other duties assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree or higher OR 48 hours of college credit OR passed the ParaPRo test OR passed the OGET OR passed the WorkKey. One year of experience in a closely related field preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic knowledge of disabilities. Computer literate with excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Good organizational skills and ability to be flexible and multi‑task. Ability to work independently, be a self‑starter, and demonstrate enthusiasm for tasks. Strong communication skills with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision and as a team player. Ability to document records accurately and manage confidential information. Ability to listen effectively. Maintain CPR, First Aid, and CPI certification. Complete 6 hours of continuing education for paraprofessionals annually. Additional Skills Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English and effectively communicate with supervisors, school personnel, and coworkers. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition and subtraction. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and manage abstract and concrete variables. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, talk, or hear; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch; lift students for proper positioning; transfer students to toilets and therapeutic equipment; frequently walk the hallways of the school. Work Environment The work environment can, at times, be stressful but is usually calm. There may be many interruptions due to student behavior or required accommodations.
