Specialist, Technology Engineer (Mainframe)

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio or Des Moines, Iowa office 2 days per week. Remote candidates may also be considered.

The Mainframe Shared Services Engineer designs, engineers, administers, automates, and supports the reliability and strategic evolution of core IBM z/OS shared-services platforms that enable critical enterprise workloads. The role serves as a primary subject-matter resource for IBM MQ on z/OS, with primary responsibility for messaging architecture, configuration, administration, automation, monitoring, troubleshooting, performance, resiliency, and lifecycle management. The engineer also supports CICS, z/OS Connect, COBOL runtime environments, CTG/WAS, and other key independent software vendor (ISV) products across the mainframe ecosystem. Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, disciplined operational practices, effective collaboration with application and infrastructure teams, and a continuous focus on stability, security, modernization, and service improvement.

• Provide primary engineering, administration, and operational support for enterprise IBM MQ for z/OS infrastructure that supports mission-critical business messaging and application integration services.

• Design, configure, monitor, tune, troubleshoot, and lifecycle-manage IBM MQ environments, including queue managers, channels, security, availability, performance, resiliency, and recovery capabilities.

• Establish MQ standards, automation, operational procedures, and support practices that improve reliability, efficiency, observability, and consistency across the platform.

• Engineer, administer, and support enterprise-scale CICS Transaction Server environments and their integration with IBM MQ and dependent application services.

• Engineer, administer, and support z/OS Connect, CTG, WebSphere Application Server (WAS), and related middleware technologies that enable application and mainframe integration.

• Provide technical leadership for Enterprise COBOL runtime environments, Language Environment (LE), and associated z/OS execution services.

• Lead installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrades, and lifecycle management of IBM and third-party independent software vendor (ISV) products.

• Perform root cause analysis and drive resolution of complex MQ, middleware, availability, performance, integration, and operational issues.

• Collaborate with application development teams to optimize messaging and runtime environments and improve service delivery.

• Partner with architecture and engineering teams on modernization initiatives, platform enhancements, and strategic evolution of mainframe shared services.

• Provide technical guidance during audits, compliance reviews, disaster recovery testing, and platform resiliency exercises.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and vendor solutions that strengthen messaging, integration, service capabilities, and operational effectiveness.

• Participate in incident response, change management, production support, and continuous-improvement processes.

As a Technology Engineer, you’ll deliver standard and custom supportable technology products based on Nationwide’s architectural standards, technology roadmaps, industry trends, and business requirements. You’ll focus on collaboration, data, systems, storage, middleware, network, security, and contact center technology products. You’ll also be accountable for the operational aspects and management of these products according to business requirements and defined service level agreements (SLAs).

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

• Creates and implements standard builds and templates for all technology platforms.

• Drives requirements to meet current and future needs, tracks and reports capacity postures.

• Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

• Analyzes reports and delivery recommendations to remediate capacity issues.

• Implements capacity enhancements.

• Designs standard and custom technology solutions for business partner projects, including pre-production testing, performance tuning, handoffs, and certification.

• Delivers technology and product optimization, migrations and management, including technology and product design, planning, power, and environmental management.

• Collaborates with others to develop meaningful metrics that drive fact-based decisions on a given product/environment/solution.

• Conducts proactive system maintenance, disaster recovery planning, data backup and recovery as well as inventory, configuration and utility product management.

• Executes production engineering processes, incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, change management, release management, and knowledge management.

• Provides production support for all technology platforms.

• Provides oversight for technical labs and development environments.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Engineering Manager or Technology Product Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or a related field are preferred.

License/Certification/Designation : Technology certifications or designations are not required, but encouraged (i.e.: AWS, Azure, scripting and development languages, delivery methods, security).

Experience : Four or more years of experience with moderately complex integrated solutions and an ability to develop and modify existing solutions for specialized needs. Experience with automation of solution configuration and deployment and with system management processes and tools. Experience with concepts and solutions: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and package solutions.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong communication skills, knowledge of planning, management and execution of Accelerated Solutions Delivery framework, Information Security acumen. Ability to influence, negotiate, and set priorities are needed. Insurance or financial services industry knowledge is a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences, may take precedence.
