Through innovative housing, job training, and family support programs, we serve hundreds of families each year across Chicagoland.New Moms is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Accountant to support the organization's financial integrity through accurate accounting, financial reporting, and compliance. This role is responsible for managing key accounting functions, including payroll, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, audit preparation, and grant compliance.The Accountant plays an important role in ensuring the financial health of both New Moms and its social enterprise, Bright Endeavors, by maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening internal controls, and supporting sound financial decision-making. This position partners closely with the Finance Director and other departments to ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and funding requirements.This position is located at New Moms' main office in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.Location: New Moms Main Office (5317 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL)Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours/week. Following onboarding, this position could be eligible for a hybrid schedule.Starting Salary: $78,000 - $83,000Your day may begin by preparing journal entries for bank transactions, payroll and fixed assets before reconciling bank and investment accounts. Later, you might review grant revenue and expenditures, ensure compliance with donor restrictions, partner with the Finance Director to prepare month-end financial statements, or collaborate with colleagues to resolve accounting discrepancies.Throughout the week, you'll support payroll processing, maintain accurate financial records, prepare audit schedules, and identify opportunities to improve accounting systems and workflows. Your work ensures New Moms has the financial information needed to make informed decisions while maintaining the highest standards of accountability to funders and stakeholders.Core ResponsibilitiesProcess payroll and related journal entries while serving as backup for payroll functionsLead month-end and year-end close activitiesCoordinate annual audit, Single Audit, and Form 990 preparationEnsure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)Perform monthly bank and investment account reconciliationsTrack restricted and unrestricted funds and resolve reconciliation discrepanciesMaintain supporting documentation for audits and donor complianceAdminister capital expenditure processes and maintain fixed asset recordsTrack capital purchases, depreciation, funding sources, and grant complianceMaintain fixed asset schedules and supporting documentationSupport grant accounting, restricted fund tracking, and compliance reportingCollaborate with grant and contracts teams to ensure compliance with funding requirementsMaintain temporary restricted schedules and reconcile private funding activityPrepare journal entries, financial reports, and supporting schedulesAssist with financial statement preparation and audit supportEnsure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, internal controls, and organizational policiesSupport staff understanding of financial systems and reporting toolsStrengthen internal controls and improve accounting processes and documentationDevelop and maintain accounting SOPsIdentify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve financial operationsYou'll thrive in this role if you are:Passionate about using your accounting expertise to support a mission-driven organizationHighly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracyComfortable balancing day-to-day accounting with process improvement initiativesAnalytical and naturally curious about financial trends and reconciliationAble to manage multiple priorities while consistently meeting deadlinesA collaborative partner who communicates financial information clearly to non-finance colleaguesCommitted to integrity, accountability, and continuous improvementQualifications:Education:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field requiredCPA and/or Master's degree preferredExperience:Four (4) or more years of nonprofit accounting experienceKnowledge of government grant guidelines and restricted fund accountingPayroll processing experience preferredExperience with Microsoft Office and QuickBooks requiredExperience with NetSuite preferredSkills:Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAPExcellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsAbility to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracyStrong interpersonal and written communication skillsExperience improving financial systems, processes, and internal controlsWork Environment: Must be able to sit/stand for up to 8 hours, walk stairs, and lift up to 30–40 lbs (or perform with reasonable accommodation).
