Job Summary

To perform duties of a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer as defined by State Constitution, State Laws, County Ordinance, and department polices (Racine County Deputy Contract).

The 2025 - 2028 wage rates are as follows:

Key Responsibilities

A Deputy Sheriff holding the rank of "Deputy" is an entry level sworn law enforcement position within the Sheriff's Office performing duties as assigned to Deputy Sheriffs' holding the rank of Deputy, in the general areas of, but not limited to:

  • Participate in special units such as: Strategic Patrol Unit, Warrants Unit, K9 Handler, Courthouse Security, Domestic Violence Specialist, Evidence Technician, Evidence Custodian, Training Officer, SWAT Team, Dive Team, Crisis Negotiations Team.
  • Respond to citizen's requests for assistance.
  • Investigate criminal activity and civil complaints.
  • Take into custody and provide services to individuals.
  • Guard and care for prisoners.
  • Restrain aggressive persons to include applying handcuffs and other restraints without assistance from others.
  • Engage in physical altercations with or without equipment or weapons and have sufficient skills/training to overcome and subdue suspects.
  • Observe for improper activities.
  • Enforce traffic laws, state statutes and county ordinances.
  • Write reports, citations, documentation and diagrams.
  • Testify in court.
  • Operate vehicles and other equipment including weapons during hours of work.
  • Work overtime hours during situations deemed by the Sheriff as an emergency.
Patrol Deputy
  • Perform law enforcement services within Racine County, including motor vehicle traffic enforcement and accident investigation.
  • Respond to calls assigned and take appropriate action.
  • Locate and serve warrants and commitments, serve related civil process, and prepare appropriate documentation.
  • Transport prisoners.
  • Perform emergency first aid functions at accident scenes or other incidents.
  • Perform patrol services in such a manner so as to attempt to deter criminal activity and to be aware of activities in patrol areas.
  • Perform special assignments such as COPS, conduct programs as directed by the Sheriff to include speaking engagements on a variety of topics.
  • Prepare all necessary reports and documentation related to duties.
Water Patrol Deputy
  • Provide law enforcement services in the Racine Harbor, Lake Michigan and the other waterways in Racine County.
  • Conduct search and rescue operations upon the waters of Racine County.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning operations to boats and equipment used by the Water Patrol operations.
  • Provide public relations programs and assist the public concerning boating safety and boat operations.
  • Prepare all necessary reports and documentation.
Court/Conveyance Deputy
  • Provide security to court operations in Racine County.
  • Transport and maintain control of prisoners and others in custody of the courts or Sheriff's Office to other facilities or back, in a safe, secure manner.
  • Prepare and review appropriate and necessary reports and documentation concerning arrests, citation paperwork, dispositions and other administrative activities concerning Sheriff's Office arrests or other agencies arrests, if so directed.

Supervision Received: Receives supervision from authority as outlined in the department's organizational chart.

Qualifications
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old.
  • Must have an associate's degree from a Wisconsin vocational, technical and adult education district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of sixty (60) fully accredited college level credits.
  • Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's (Driver's) license from state of residence and be eligible for licensing as a class "D" operator in Wisconsin, not revoked, suspended, or otherwise prohibited, at time of application. Applicant must have a valid Wisconsin Class "D" driver's license at time of appointment and maintain valid Wisconsin driver's license as a condition of employment.
    • Driving record will be reviewed at time of appointment.
  • No convictions at any time or at any place of a felony unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
  • No convictions of a misdemeanor or other offense of which the circumstances substantially relate to the position.
  • Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm by state or federal laws.
  • Must participate in oral panel interview process.
  • Must successfully pass the following: medical testing, physical readiness testing (if not certified), a background investigation, and a psychological exam
  • Psychological exam must be approved by the Civil Service Commission.
  • Prompt and regular attendance.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to obtain certification from Wisconsin State Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) training (720 hours) plus an annual 24 hour mandated re-certification.
  • Ability to obtain CPR certification and recertify every other year.
  • Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Operation Concepts (EVOC) certification and recertify every other year.
  • Ability to obtain proficiency in the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, including during emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform work in an accurate, calm and timely manner in crisis or emergency situation.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions such as operational procedures, court directives, arrest documents, department manuals, and laws.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow policies, procedures, legal directives, bulletins, instructions, reports and manuals.
  • Ability to operate computer terminals, radio equipment, speed detection equipment and evidence gathering equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Height and weight in proportion. A medical examiner will consider height and weight in determining physical fitness for the position.
  • Binocular visual acuity must be corrected to 20/20 – soft contacts may be required.
  • Hearing defined as pure tone air conductive average threshold evidencing no more than 25 DB HL for the test frequencies of 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Hertz in each ear, with none of the listed frequencies greater than 35 DB, with or without hearing devices.
  • Continuously (67-100% of workday) talk, hear, and use vision to include close, distance, color, night, peripheral, field of vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus (for duties such as traffic control, driving, maintaining control and security of situations).
  • Frequently (34-66% of workday) stand (such as directing traffic), walk (such as security checks), sit (such as on jail unit or in squad car), bend/twist, reach, and feel (such as in restraining individuals, directing traffic, handling property bins, searching individuals); light fingering (such as performing data entry on computer keyboard), lift and carry objects (such as food trays weighing up to 5 pounds).
  • Occasionally (1-33% of workday) stoop, kneel, and crouch (such as to restrain inmates or perform first aid functions); walk and run distances under varying weather and terrain conditions (such as to pursue and apprehend suspects), grapple, restrain and handcuff individuals using arrest tactics; climb (such as fences and ladders to investigate and/or pursue individuals; 4 flights in circular staircase of 13 steps each for jail rescue operations or more flights/stairs in pursuit situations); maintain balance (such as in pursuit situations); pushing (such as inmate in wheelchair); pulling (such as boats, individuals in rescue operations); lift and carry objects (such as buoys and anchors, squad case weighing up to 30 pounds, persons weighing up to 180 pounds to lift out of water, property bins weighing up to 50 pounds including overhead lifting); push, lift and drag, or lift and carry individuals weighing approximately 180 pounds (such as person in wheelchair to bunk and/or toilet, out of vehicles, 50 feet toward jail fire tower, 4-person lift of person on medical board, and
