This is a full-time position: Monday - Friday, 6:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. 

SUMMARY -  Semiskilled position responsible for performing custodial and janitorial duties in City facilities, along with light building maintenance and grounds support, as needed. Ensures City facilities are clean, sanitary, well-presented, and ready for public use while supporting the operations of the Infrastructure Maintenance Division.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Daily Cleaning & Sanitation

• Restroom Upkeep: Thoroughly clean and disinfect toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, partitions, and floors; restock soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizer dispensers.
• Waste Management: Empty all office, hallway, and restroom trash and recycling bins; replace liners and transport waste to designated dumpsters.
• Floor Care: Sweep and mop; vacuum carpets, rugs, and high-traffic entryways.
• Surface Disinfection: Wipe down high-touch public areas, including door handles, light switches, elevator buttons, handrails, counters, and reception areas.
• Break Room & Kitchen Maintenance: Clean countertops, tables, sinks, and exterior surfaces of appliances (microwaves, refrigerators).

 

Periodic & Weekly Duties

• Dusting: Dust office furniture and surrounding areas, filing cabinets, windowsills, blinds, picture frames, and wall vents (excluding desks).
• Glass & Window Cleaning: Wash interior glass doors, partitions, and windows to remove smudges and fingerprints.
• Floor Maintenance: Clean hard floors, shampoo and/or steam-clean carpets on a scheduled rotation.
• Cobweb Removal: Clear cobwebs from corners, stairwells, and high ceilings outside doorways.

 

Event Setup & Public-Facing Support

• Meeting Room Preparation: Arrange and set up tables, chairs, podiums, and microphones for City Council meetings, advisory board meetings, training sessions, public hearings, elections, and other City-sponsored events; tear down and store equipment post-event, as needed.
• Public Interaction: Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when directing citizens or visitors to various municipal departments.

 

Minor Maintenance & Facility Upkeep

• Reporting Major Issues: Inspect City facilities for structural damage, vandalism, plumbing leaks, HVAC malfunctions, lighting failures, and other maintenance concerns, and promptly report deficiencies to the Infrastructure Maintenance Manager.
• Inventory Management: Monitor stock levels of cleaning chemicals, paper products, and tools; maintain inventory and request replenishment as needed.

 

Exterior & Grounds Duties

• Entrance Maintenance: Sweep or blow off exterior entryways, and immediate walkways; pick up litter around the building perimeter.

 

Additional Duties

• Confidentiality: Employees must not access or handle any documents or materials unrelated to assigned duties and must treat all information encountered while working in City facilities as confidential.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES - This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in custodial services, janitorial work, building maintenance, facilities maintenance, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and have and maintain an acceptable driving record.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works both indoors and outdoors and is frequently exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, and varying weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, odors, and fumes or airborne particles associated with custodial and light maintenance activities. The employee may occasionally be exposed to slippery surfaces, ladders, moving mechanical equipment, and powered custodial equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may occasionally be loud during maintenance activities, special events, or when operating cleaning equipment.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read work orders, logs, cleaning schedules, product labels, manufacturer instructions, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Requires the ability to prepare work orders, activity logs, and reports according to prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.

Intelligence : Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary to measure cleaning solutions, maintain inventories, and complete work records.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment, hand tools, and powered cleaning equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as hand and power tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Knowledge of Job: Has basic knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment related to custodial care and facility cleaning. Has general knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with cleaning chemicals, equipment, and light maintenance work, and the associated safety precautions. Has general knowledge of the various grades, quality standards, sources of supply, and price trends for cleaning supplies and janitorial equipment used in the maintenance of City buildings and facilities. Is able to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations. Is skilled in the use and care of custodial tools and equipment, including floor care machines, vacuums, and hand tools, necessary to perform cleaning and light maintenance tasks. Is able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Is able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments. Is able to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with department heads, coworkers, and the public, and in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Quality of Work : Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts within department and division, and with coworkers and the general public.

Safety and Housekeeping :  Adheres to all City safety policies and procedures and safely operates custodial equipment and cleaning products in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area and promptly reports unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
