Position Highway Maintenance Worker (4831-50) Location Cincinnati, OH Job Id 4831-50 # of Openings 0 Work Location Various County Locations Work Hours 40 hours/week Pay Range $20.58 hourly Benefits 11 Paid Holidays Paid Vacation and Sick Time (accruing immediately) Personal Days Ohio Public Employee Retirement System (14% employer contribution and defined benefit option) Medical, HRA, Dental, Vision, Employer‑Paid Life Insurance, Long‑Term Disability, Tuition Reimbursement, Public Service Loan Forgiveness Eligibility, Free On‑Site Parking, Wellness Incentives, Employee Assistance Program, access to Free Medical and Rx through Marathon Health, Behavioral and Mental Health Resources General Description Under general supervision, the Highway Maintenance Worker performs general highway maintenance duties, repairs and installs guardrails, cuts shrubs and trees, mows grass, removes refuse and trash, assists in snow and ice removal activities, operates center‑line machine and various other equipment, fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs road signs, operates tractor‑mower, performs routine maintenance and repair on trucks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform general highway maintenance duties (cut brush, shrubs and trees, mow grass, remove refuse and trash) Patch and seal roadways and repair berms Repair and install guardrails, barricades, walls, inlets, headwalls, manholes, etc. Dig ditches and install culverts, pipes, guardrails, etc. Operate various equipment (intersection truck, hand paint machine, etc.) Flag on‑going traffic at construction sites; install barricades/signs as directed Assist in snow and ice removal activities; load truck with front end loader; drive dump truck to spread salt or plow snow Operate 2‑way radio Perform routine maintenance and repair on trucks Perform seasonal maintenance and repairs on pavement marking equipment during winter months Repair and install road signs Operate light and handheld equipment (chain saw, air compressor, shovels, picks, jackhammer, etc.) Manufacture and repair signs (design traffic signs following ODOT standards, fabricate using pressure roller or small roller, use necessary hand tools) Complete routine forms recording man‑hours, materials, equipment, etc.; keep stockroom books; answer telephone; maintain district logs; complete foreman’s report documenting work performed Attend meetings and serve on committees, as directed Attend training and seminars, as directed Meet all job safety requirements and OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance Be available for on‑call assignments after normal work hours, weekends, or holidays when called Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) and one (1) year work experience in road construction, erecting, installing and repairing roadway markings and signs and/or painting of traffic control lines and pavement traffic messages, maintenance or repair of vehicle and/or equipment maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Licensure or Certification Requirements Valid state of residency driver’s license Insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy Obtain within 180 calendar days of appointment a valid ClassA– Commercial Driver’s License issued by the state of residency Equipment Operated Examples include: cell phones, two‑way radios; computer, copier, fax, telephone, scanner; motor vehicles (front and rear loading trucks, side‑loading trucks, tractor‑trailer trucks, dump trucks); asphalt paver; street sweeper; Jet/Vac truck; generators; air compressors; shoring equipment; concrete mixer; snow plow; forklift; light and heavy motorized vehicles and equipment; measuring wheels; paint mixers; paint guns; power drills; grinders; sanders; jack hammer; gas welding, brazing or cutting apparatus; welding torches; weed eater; mower; pumps; paint sprayer; chain saw; circular saw; shovels; rakes; pliers; wrenches; hammers; screwdrivers; chisels; and other miscellaneous hand tools. Knowledge of County and departmental goals and objectives County and departmental policies and procedures Road construction, maintenance, and repair; proper lifting techniques Snow and ice removal English grammar and spelling Office practices and procedures Skill in Word processing; computer operation; Microsoft Office Use and operation of medium and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment; heavy and medium‑duty equipment maintenance and repair Traffic sign fabrication, installation; maintenance and repair; use of bench and hand tools Snowplow operations Ability to Carry out detailed but basic written and oral instructions Recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action Copy records precisely without error; complete routine forms Develop and maintain effective working relationships Travel to and gain access to the worksite Inherently Hazardous or Physically Demanding Working Conditions Ascend and/or descend ladders, stairs or scaffolds Work in an area where means of egress may be obstructed Exposure to chemical compounds found in office environment (toner, correction fluid, etc.) Exposure to environmental conditions that may result in injury from fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas Possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions, electrical shock Possible injury from working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines Work in or around crowds Contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or animals or life‑threatening situations Exposure to fire, hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; hazardous driving conditions Work second or third shift; exert 20–50 pounds of force occasionally or 10–25 pounds frequently; lift objects ≤50 pounds occasionally; push or pull objects ≤50 pounds occasionally Physical Demands In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work.
