Operations are Sun-Sat, 7:00am-7:00pm.Location: This position is 100% in person, primarily located at 2650 Senter Road, San Jose, CA 95111.Travel: Local travel may be required up to 80% of the time.About the San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC+CS):One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have agedout of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma.SJCC+CS offers an engaging work environment focused on growth, teamwork, and making a positive impact. Be a part of our mission to create transformational change and learn more at Summary:This position will primarily operate out of parks located in Menlo Park and will be responsible for trail patrol, littler abatement, weed abatement, refilling pet waste stations, reporting when restrooms need attention and engaging with the public on park use. This engagement will encompass park interpretation as well as enforcing city ordinances regarding park use.In addition, the supervisor implements the mission of SJCC+CS by using their leadership, supervisory and technical skills to develop the educational and work skills of young people while preserving the natural landscape of our community. The crew supervisor is responsible for the oversight of various environmental field projects in city and county parks, which may include trail maintenance, invasive species removal, native habitat restoration, beautification, fire fuel reduction, and more. The supervisor is responsible for a team of 1-9 job training Corpsmembers aged 18 to 27.Job Duties:GeneralTransport crew to the job site with equipment trailer in towWork on projects that include some of the following trades: Landscaping, trail maintenance, new trail construction,in-stream enhancement, eradicating non-native plant species, fire fuel reduction, roadside maintenance and safety.Communicate with the project sponsor, sub-contractor, or contractorOrganize, direct, and lead a crew of Corpsmembers to work efficiently to complete projects in the allotted timeframe, ensuring a high quality of workDetermine manpower levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements for each projectEnsure that SJCC+CS policies are upheld and followed on the job site.Collaborate with program staffParticipate in spike, backcountry, and emergency response expeditions as needed.Represent the Parks and Recreation Department and SJCC with courtesy and professionalismEngage with users of parks as a park interpreterEnforce city park ordinances by both public education and citationsAdministration & SafetyComplete and upload Corpsmember disciplinary action as needed, and monthly Corpsmember evaluationsComplete and submit daily reports, including attendance, safety tailgates, pre and post trip vehicle inspections, end of day reportOversee maintenance of vehicles, keys, gas cards, and registration papers.Conduct tailgate safety meetings on a daily basis and after all work-related accidents, keeping a written record of each meetingAssure that Corpsmembers wear proper safety gear at all timesTake appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job dutiesComplete paperwork for every accident reported, assure that Corpsmembers work safely at all timesCommunicate vehicle/work-related injuries to the Project DirectorIdentify common safety hazardsRead and understand product labelsCorpsmember DevelopmentBe a mentor/role model to Corpsmembers while training them skills in different tradesBuild a good rapport with each CorpsmemberAssist Corpsmembers in defining goals and creating a plan to reach those goalsProvide constant feedback on Corpsmembers performance including monthly evaluationsConsistently apply discipline and accountability as necessaryTrain Corpsmembers in proper work ethic, attitude, and personal appearanceImplement and monitor the Corpsmember education and training plan related to technical and personal skills needed to complete service assignments, including the required training in CPR/First Aid, communication, and conflict resolutionBenefits403(b) Retirement Benefits with up to 3% employer match after 1 year of serviceCredit Union and Employee Assistance PlanMedical, Vision, Dental, Disability, Pet, and Life InsuranceHoliday, Vacation, and Sick PayEducation Assistance ProgramSubsidized annual Eco PassWork Environment & RequirementsPosition requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power, vibration, and noise-producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals.
